In a significant development for the MMA world, UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones has been cleared of assault charges stemming from an incident earlier this year. The resolution comes just weeks before Jones is set to defend his title against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 in Madison Square Garden.

On Tuesday, a bench trial in Bernalillo County court, Albuquerque, saw Jones appear virtually alongside his attorney, Christopher Dodd. The champion faced two misdemeanor charges: assault and interference with communications. In a turn of events favorable to Jones, Judge Asra I. Elliott approved a plea adjudication diversion agreement proposed by the defense and prosecutors.

Under the terms of this agreement, the charges against Jones will be dismissed, contingent on two conditions:

Completion of four hours of anger management courses

Maintaining a clean legal record for the next 90 days

This resolution effectively clears the path for Jones to focus on his upcoming title defense without the looming shadow of legal troubles.
