Per Marchand, Lowe&#8217;s seven-figure salary was the biggest factor in ESPN&#8217;s decision.<\/p>\n<p>Lowe is one of ESPN&#8217;s top NBA writers. The 47-year-old began working with ESPN 12 years ago under the Grantland banner. Lowe was hired by former ESPN employee and current Ringer CEO, Bill Simmons.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past few years, Lowe began appearing on ESPN&#8217;s afternoon basketball show, <em>NBA Today<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Lowe is the host of the popular\u00a0<em>Lowe Post\u00a0<\/em>podcast.<\/p>\n<p>In August, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/news\/espn-fires-robert-griffin-iii-sam-ponder\/\">ESPN fired NFL analyst Robert Griffin III and <em>Sunday NFL Countdown\u00a0<\/em>host Sam Ponder<\/a>. Huge loss for ESPN and a huge gain for whoever wins the war to hire him.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Chris Mannix (@SIChrisMannix) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SIChrisMannix\/status\/1839359059746787503?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 26, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Lowe is considered one of the smartest basketball personalities on ESPN.<\/p>\n<p>His firing sparked major outrage, as many of Lowe&#8217;s contemporaries and fans came to his defense.<\/p>\n<p>SI&#8217;s Chris Mannix described Lowe as one of the &#8220;most talented and versatile NBA journalists&#8221; and called his dismissal a &#8220;huge loss for ESPN.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Adrian Wojnarowski, Lowe&#8217;s former colleague, said, &#8220;Zach is easily one of the most talented people I&#8217;ve ever worked with or around in this industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>NBA Today\u00a0<\/em>host Malika Andrews praised Lowe&#8217;s &#8220;deep knowledge and skill&#8221; and called him an &#8220;incredible teammate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>ESPN&#8217;s basketball coverage is a crossroads. The network needs a new top insider after Wojnarowski&#8217;s retirement.
