While those bouts came in a variety of circumstances, they combined to prove one indisputable truth: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/tag\/mike-tyson\/\">Iron Mike<\/a> was capable of knocking someone out with incredible ease. Not every fight, however, took place in the ring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Mike Tyson fought plenty of professional boxers, he was known to occasionally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/mike-tyson-has-a-surprising-pick-for-the-toughest-opponent-he-ever-fought\/\">tangle with other opponents,<\/a> too. His study of the sweet science, however, began in challenging circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tyson grew up in Brooklyn and frequently found himself in trouble with the law; according to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-news\/mike-tyson-on-ditching-club-life-and-getting-sober-56592\/\">Rolling Stone,<\/a><\/em> he had been arrested 38 times by age 13. He eventually landed in the Tyron School for Boys, where he sought out Bobby Stewart, a former boxer working as a counselor. Once Stewart saw the teenager&#8217;s raw talent, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/mike-tyson-learned-about-exploding-livers-from-legendary-trainer-cus-damato\/\">he introduced him to Cus D&#8217;Amato.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the legendary trainer gave Tyson the stable father figure he sorely lacked, D&#8217;Amato also helped Mike take his boxing to the next level. Even as a teenager, he had<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/heres-exactly-how-it-would-feel-to-get-punched-by-mike-tyson\/\"> incredible punching power<\/a>; working with Cus, however, he learned to temper his aggression using the peek-a-boo style. That combination of offense and defense <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/how-good-was-mike-tyson-in-his-prime\/\">proved to be unstoppable.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tyson went on to claim the heavyweight title at only 20 years old. While his career <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/the-night-mike-tyson-hit-rock-bottom-with-prostitutes-cocaine-and-a-morphine-drip\/\">would eventually crumble in dramatic fashion,<\/a> Iron Mike did plenty to earn his reputation as &#8216;the baddest man on the planet.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Iron Mike&#8217;s first fight started with a pigeon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Mike Tyson: A pigeon caused my first fight\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9FmoyZCTfrg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While Mike Tyson eventually found himself boxing on pay-per-view television for millions of dollars, his first fight was a much less glamorous affair. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Growing up, Tyson wasn&#8217;t anything like &#8216;the baddest man on the planet.&#8217; If anything, he was a target for neighborhood bullies; that reality led him to find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/mike-tyson-spends-an-obscene-amount-of-money-on-his-pet-pigeons\/\">solace among his pigeons.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As a child, I was very awkward and never felt as though I fit in (anywhere). On the roof, none of my insecurities mattered,\u201d&nbsp;Tyson wrote&nbsp;in&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com\/2011\/05\/04\/bird-week-mike-tyson-defends-the-pigeon\/\">the New York Times<\/a><\/em>.&nbsp;\u201cMy birds never judged me or made me feel inadequate. I was actually the most important relationship that they had. They were totally dependent on me for food and shelter, and I felt honored to be needed, and this made me feel wanted and relevant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The birds, however, also were at the heart of Iron Mike&#8217;s first-ever fight. As the boxer explained to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9FmoyZCTfrg\">Graham Bensinger,<\/a> a neighborhood bully stole one of his pigeons; when Tyson asked for it back, the other boy killed the bird on the spot.
