Experimental England Fall To Greece

Lee Carsley started an interesting XI for Thursday’s Nations League clash against Greece, with a very attacking side named despite having no recognised striker in the lineup.

The first half was poor from England, who couldn’t get a real grip on the game as they struggled to create any real opportunities and left the match open to Greece who continued to pressure the hosts.

Greece went close to opening the scoring in the first 45 minutes, as Jordan Pickford was caught off his line with a lobbed shot and only an incredible Levi Colwill goal line clearance could save the goalkeeper’s blushes.

Cole Palmer had by far the best chance of the first half for England, but his shot from the edge of the six yard box was blazed over the crossbar in an opportunity that the Chelsea superstar will have been deeply frustrated with.

Greece finally got a goal they so richly deserved just minutes into the second half, as Vangelis Pavlidis was given all the time in the world inside the box, with England allowing the forward to slot home an emotional first goal of the night.

The visitors immediately wheeled away to the corner to celebrate, with a few of the players in tears as they held up a George Baldock shirt in tribute to the former Greek international who sadly passed away this week.

Greece had a second and third goal disallowed in the second half, with VAR coming to England’s aid on both occasions as Greek players were offside in the buildup.
