Last Time Arsenal Won at the Etihad

The last time Arsenal won at the Etihad against Manchester City, David Cameron was still Prime Minister and Jeremy Clarkson punched a BBC producer not long after.

Arsenal face another taxing trip on the road on matchday five, as they cut their teeth against the champions to see if they really can challenge Manchester City once more.

Following a mightily impressive showing against Tottenham last weekend, spirits are high heading into what many are labelling as an early-season title decider. City too are racking up wins early and have yet to drop points; there is, so far, little signs of their typical sluggishness in opening weeks of the season.

When Was the Last Time Arsenal Won at the Etihad Against Manchester City?

The Gunners will be enthused by the fact they remained unbeaten against Manchester City last season.

Gabriel Martinelli’s last-gasp deflected strike back in October of last year handed them their first league victory against the Cityzens since December 2015, signalling a significant shift in Arsenal’s title credentials.

Although they were pipped to the title by a two-point margin, they also managed to grind out a goalless draw at the Etihad back in March in what was a fairly grating watch.

It did however mark the first time Arsenal picked up points away in Manchester since 2016, and will no doubt have inspired confidence heading into this season’s early meeting.

For all Arsenal’s positive work to change the narrative last season, they still find themselves cowering behind an unwanted record.

Not since January 2015 have Arsenal won at the Etihad.

Goals from Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud handed them the victory that day, but nine years of winless trips to the Etihad – which includes just two draws in the process – is the kind of record that takes considerable undoing, especially against Pep Guardiola‘s serial winners.
