Jordan Pickford’s error almost enabled Greece to take the lead against England at Wembley on Thursday evening, however Levi Colwill spared the goalkeeper’s blushes with an incredible goal line clearance.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford will be thanking Levi Colwill come the full-time whistle on Thursday, as the Chelsea defender made an incredible goal line clearance to spare the stopper’s blushes less than 10 minutes into England’s Nations League clash against Greece at Wembley.

Pickford came out of his box to collect the ball after some strong shielding from Three Lions skipper John Stones, but he then dribbled into danger and lost his footing when trying to pass the ball, handing Greece’s captain Anastasios Bakasetas a golden opportunity to open the scoring.

The Panathinaikos midfielder quickly lobbed his effort past Pickford and over the head of Stones, but luckily for the 30-year-old goalkeeper and Lee Carsley, Colwill tracked the ball and cleared it off the line with a first-time clearance.

Had it gone in, it would’ve handed the Greek a deserved lead in the English capital, with Ivan Jovanovic’s side enjoying the better opportunities during the early stages of the fixture.

With Harry Kane ruled out through injury, interim manager Carsley saw Thursday’s tie as a perfect chance to try something different tactically, which saw Jude Bellingham lead the line as a false nine.

“It [Harry Kane’s absence] has given us a chance to try something and be creative with the way we play. We talk about how exciting and creative we can be so I’m looking forward to the game.” Carsley told ITV prior to kick-off.

“We have a lot of flexibility and you may see a lot of changes. Hopefully it will be exciting. I see all the players interchanging, we have some really creative players.

“Greece have won the last two games, haven’t conceded a goal so we are expecting a tough challenge.”
