Unai Emery can join Jose Mourinho as the only manager to beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League with three different clubs as Aston Villa face the Bundesliga side on Wednesday evening.

The Villains qualified for the Champions League after finishing fourth in the Premier League last season and made history by competing in the re-branded competition for the first time.

Unai Emery’s side got off to a flying start with a 3-0 win against BSC Young Boys away from home, thanks to goals from Youri Tielemans, Amadou Onana and Jacob Ramsey.

However, Villa will be going into this clash with Bayern Munich after a disappointing result in the league, being held by Ipswich Town to a 2-2 draw.

The Villains have won four of their last five games and have suffered just one defeat in the league, losing to Arsenal at home.

As for the Bayern, results have been superb since the beginning of Vincent Kompany’s reign as manager, remaining undefeated from the opening five league games and sitting top of the Bundesliga with 13 points (4W & 1D).

Harry Kane was reported to have taken a slight knock to his ankle, however the England international is set to start on his return to his home nation.

Unai Emery will be looking to continue his good record in the UCL non-knockout stages, as the Spaniard has only lost three games of the last 20 at this stage of the competition (13W, 4D & 3L).

This is not the only record Emery will be looking at on Wednesday evening, as the Aston Villa manager can join Jose Mourinho as the only coach to beat Bayern with three different clubs.

In September 2017, the former PSG managed guided his side to a 3-0 win over Bayern in the French capital – thanks to goals from Dani Alves, Edison Cavani and Neymar Jr.

More recently, during his reign as Villarreal boss, Emery pulled off a shocking victory over the Bundesliga giants – winning 1-0 in the round of 16 first-leg (April 2022).
