Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has come to the defence of his Manchester United counterpart Erik ten Hag amid growing criticism surrounding the Dutchman’s tenure.

United have faced a mixed start to the season, with disappointing draws against Crystal Palace and FC Twente raising questions about their form and Ten Hag’s managerial abilities.

The Red Devils currently sit 11th in the Premier League table, just one place above Sunday’s opponents Tottenham.

However, Postecoglou believes that the criticism directed at Ten Hag is unfair, given his recent successes at United, including winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

The Spurs boss emphasised that managers should be judged on their overall contribution and not solely on short-term results.

“I think if Erik hadn’t won anything last year, they would be saying he’s just got to win something and everything will be alright,” Postecoglou said.

“That’s probably why I rail against it, because it’s a trap you can fall into, thinking all I have to do [at Tottenham] is win something and everyone is going to love me and think I’m doing a great job.”

Postecoglou also acknowledged the immense pressure that comes with managing a top club like Manchester United. He highlighted the constant scrutiny and expectations placed on managers in today’s era, where success is often measured by short-term results.

“I don’t know who coined the phrase ‘the impossible job,’ but I think it’s become even more impossible now because it seems like success is not enough if it doesn’t have identity, [and] identity is not enough unless it’s followed by aesthetics,” Postecoglou added.

“Aesthetics are not enough unless they’re followed by legacy. There’s always another layer.”

While Ten Hag faces pressure to improve United’s performances, Postecoglou’s support offers a glimmer of hope for the Dutchman.

As Spurs continue their own journey, Postecoglou will be hoping to secure a victory over United on Sunday that will strengthen their position in the Premier League table.
