Tottenham and Wales winger Brennan Johnson has deactivated his Instagram account after being heavily criticised for his performance in Spurs’ North London derby defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.

Brennan Johnson Deactivates Instagram

After suffering defeat in the North London derby against bitter rivals Arsenal on Sunday afternoon, Tottenham winger Brennan Johnson has deactivated his @brenjohnson_ Instagram account. It comes following a barrage of online abuse aimed at the Wales international.

Despite numerous absentees for the Gunners, Spurs were unable to take advantage and fell to a third successive home defeat against Mikel Arteta‘s side thanks to Gabriel’s bullet header in the second period.

Johnson, who joined the North London side from Nottingham Forest in a move worth close to £50 million in September 2023, featured on the right side of the attack, regaining his starting berth from Wilson Odobert.

But after failing to cause the visitors’ defence any real problems across his 68-minute cameo, Johnson has been on the end of mass criticism from Tottenham fans and pundits, and he’s now seemingly had enough.

The 23-year-old limited his comments on Instagram after suffering online abuse back in January, but has now taken it one step further, deactivating his account altogether.

Jamie O’Hara Slams ‘Frustrating’ Johnson

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara, who was in attendance at Sunday’s North London derby, shared his frustration with the winger on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

“Brennan Johnson is even more frustrating to watch in the flesh than he is on TV.” he tweeted.

O’Hara continued in a follow-up post: “He never shows for the ball he hides behind the Arsenal player, he’s never an option watching him live it’s unbelievable how much he hides.”

It isn’t the first time O’Hara has criticised the youngster either, as he did so on talkSPORT after Tottenham’s draw against Leicester last month, stating that he needs to start living up to his £50 million price tag sooner rather than later.

“Brennan Johnson, for me, he has to be better. We paid £50 million. He is more than anyone who winds me up. Every time he gets the ball, it looks like he forgets how to control it.

“He is so frustrating. He needs to be better in a Spurs shirt. If you are going to play right-wing for Spurs, you think of all the great right-wingers we have had. He needs to be better.

“He has been there a season, and he needs to hit the ground running. Brennan Johnson needs to be better. For me, he hasn’t been good enough – Brennan Johnson needs to give me more.

“His final ball isn’t good enough. The amount of times [James] Maddison in the first half sweeps the ball out to him and his first touch just lets him down. He knows it as well because he looks at himself.”
