Strong favourite for Saturday’s Dewhurst Stakes, The Lion In Winter has been declared a non-runner at Newmarket due to a bruised foot. 

The Lion In Winter Withdrawn From Dewhurst Due To Knock

Aidan O’Brien’s charge topped the market leading up to Saturday’s feature race at Newmarket but will now not participate due to a bruised foot. Due to his withdrawal, Charlie Appleby’s Shadow Of Light is now the odds-on favourite with the best horse racing betting sites at odds of 8/11.

The son of Sea The Stars would have been searching for a third win from as many career starts, but looks like he will be waiting until the Futurity Stakes at Doncaster later this month instead.

Last seen since winning the Group 3 Acomb Stakes at York (see below), this classy two-year-old has a bright future ahead of him. Notably, the current markets see him as a leading contender for next season’s 2,000 Guineas and Epsom Derby.

The form of that Group 3 success at York has also been boosted significantly in recent weeks. Runner-up Wimbledon Hawkeye landed the Royal Lodge Stakes next time out and fourth-placed The Waco Kid went on to triumph in the Tattersalls Stakes.

Despite the withdrawal of one of his brightest juveniles, Aidan O’Brien is still well represented in the Dewhurst. He saddles the unbeaten Expanded who makes his 2nd start and outsider Rock Of Cashel.
