Manchester United legend Roy Keane has ruled himself out of a potential interim managerial role at Old Trafford, citing a lack of authority as the primary obstacle.

Roy Keane’s Blunt Assessment Of Man United Managerial Situation

The former midfield maestro, renown for his no-nonsense approach, expressed concerns about the current state of affairs at his old club.

Speaking on The Overlap’s Stick To Football podcast, Keane believes that current manager Erik ten Hag lacks the necessary power and control to effectively lead the team.

“They’re not gonna be asking me,” Keane said in response to Ian Wright’s suggestion of taking an interim role at the club. “They just wouldn’t… they just wouldn’t.”

Keane pointed to the recent changes in Ten Hag’s coaching staff as evidence of the manager’s limited influence.

“Players will look at the manager and go, ‘well, all your staff went in the summer. I didn’t see you fighting for any of them. You’re bringing more staff in.’ I just think it looks chaotic, doesn’t it?”

Keane also expressed his frustration with the club’s current situation, stating that he believes the players are “not good enough” and that the club needs to “make some big decisions.”

“They’ve got to get rid of some players,” Keane said. “They’ve got to bring in some quality. They need to get a manager who’s going to come in and say, ‘I’m the boss. I’m making the decisions.’ And they need to back him.”

Keane Rules Out Replacing Ten Hag – So Who Could?

Despite his strong ties to the club, Keane seems reluctant to return to Old Trafford in a managerial capacity. His preference for a more authoritative role appears to be at odds with the current dynamics at the club.

Other names have been linked to replace Ten Hag as manager, including former PSV boss and current assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy, as well as the out-of-work Thomas Tuchel.

Other names being touted include Graham Potter, Unai Emery, and Xabi Alonso – the latter being predicted as the number one choice by AI, courtesy of SportsCasting.

Besides Van Nistelrooy, Gareth Southgate also remains a likely candidate according to the best football betting sites.
