There were many talking points after gameweek four in the English top-flight, including Liverpool losing at home to Forest. However, the standout discussion surrounded a 65 record Premier League yellow cards issued by the referees over the ten matches – including a staggering 14 in the Bournemouth vs Chelsea clash on Saturday night.

65 Premier League Yellow Cards Issued Over Gameweek Four

Referees in the Premier League came under the spotlight in the middle of September, on what was only the fourth round of top-flight matches of the new 2024/25 football season.

Back from the international break, Premier League fans were chomping at the bit to see their favourite sides in action, and it seems over the league lay-off the referees had all been shopping for new ‘Yellow Cards’.

This is because the gameweek four match officials brandished an incredible 65 Premier League yellow cards over the ten matches – which also set a new matchday record in the Premier League.

Some football fans were claiming the increased number is due to the controversial two yellow cards that Arsenal’s Declan Rice got in the last set of games in their clash with Brighton. The two yellows saw the England man sent off, which led to him missing the recent North London Derby against Spurs.

With supporters saying refs were having to justify that Rice decision by being yellow card heavy in the first set of game back.

The previous worse yellow cards total was 57.

Bournemouth vs Chelsea Saw A Record-Breaking 14 Yellow Cards

Premier League Yellow Cards Record As 65 Warnings Issued By Refs Over Gameweek FourThe North London Derby between Tottenham and Arsenal saw eight yellow cards – no real shock here in what is always a fiery affair.

While there were also eight yellow cards in Liverpool’s shock home defeat to Nottm Forest.

However, it was the Bournemouth vs Chelsea game in the popular 8pm Saturday night offering that saw the most yellow cards – 14, which made up 21.5% of the total tally of 65. The ref in question was Anthony Taylor.

In contrast, the game with the least amount of Premier League yellow cards in this record week came when just three were issued in the Crystal Palace vs Leicester match.

Man City, who are still the big favourites with the best football betting sites in the UK to win the Premier League, played in the game with the second least yellow cards (4), in their 2-1 home win over Brentford.
