Persian War Novices’ Hurdle Trends For Big Chepstow Race

Friday’s Persian War Novices’ Hurdle fixture at Chepstow marks the real start of the horse racing jumps season for many and this year’s race looks another decent renewal – despite no Paul Nicholls-trained runner.

Nicholls had won 50% of the last 8 renewals of the Persian War, but he’s leaving it to another yard this year  – with a field of seven heading to post for the 3:15pm race.

The ITV Racing cameras will also be at the Welsh track to take in the race – as well as the 3:50pm – and you can see the main Persian War Novices’ Hurdle trends below that will help find the best profiles based on past winners.

  • 10/10 – Returned 10/1 or shorter
  • 10/10 – Won between 0-3 times over hurdles
  • 9/10 – Top 3 finish last time out
  • 9/10 – Aged 5 or 6 years-old
  • 9/10 – Returned 8/1 or shorter
  • 6/10 – Ran 4 months or longer ago
  • 6/10 – Had won a NH Flat race before
  • 5/10 – Won last time out
  • 5/10 – Unplaced favourites
  • 3/10 – Ridden by Harry Cobden
  • 3/10 – Winning favourites
  • 2/10 – Trained by Fergal O’Brien

If you like your horse racing stats, we’ve also got the key Cesarewitch trends ahead of Saturday’s big Newmarket race.

Trainer Fergal O’Brien Looking For His Third Persian War Novices’ Hurdle Win

With no Paul Nicholls runner in the race, the trainer with the next best record is Fergal O’Brien – who has won two of the last seven runnings.

These came in 2017 with Poetic Rhythm and in 2022 with Accidental Rebel – he’s back for more with Ryan’s Rocket, who is one of the big fancies with the best horse racing betting sites in the UK.

Ryan’s Rocket will head into the race having won two of his three hurdles starts, with the last of these an easy 5 1/2 length win at Kempton in May.

O’Brien told the popular FromTheStables site “Ryan’s Rocket was progressive winning his novices earlier in the year and now steps up a good way in class for this always significant Grade 2 hurdle. We regard him highly and are very hopeful he can make it a hat-trick.”

Jockey Harry Cobden Has A Fine Record In The Persian War

Another key Persian War Novices’ Hurdle trend tells us it’s a race that champion jockey Harry Cobden loves to win too.

With no Nicholls entry to get the leg-up on, Cobden has been snapped up by John C McConnell to ride their Intense Approach.

This 5 year-old was an easy winner up at Kelso just 23 days ago over 2m5f so we know the horse is fit and well, plus that he’ll also stay further than his 2m 3 1/2f trip.
