Newcastle Chelsea Team News

Chelsea head up north to take on Newcastle in the Carabao Cup fourth round at St. James’ Park on Wednesday, and we’ve got the latest in regards to team news and confirmed lineups, and a prediction in our preview.

Newcastle vs Chelsea Preview

Having just played each other in the Premier League on Sunday, Newcastle and Chelsea go head-to-head for the second time in the space of three days as they face off in the Carabao Cup fourth round at St. James’ Park on Wednesday.

It was the Blues who came out on top at Stamford Bridge with a 2-1 scoreline at the weekend, condemning the Magpies to a second successive defeat, leaving them without a league victory in five straight matches.

Across those five matches, Eddie Howe‘s side have suffered three defeats and two draws, with their Carabao Cup third round victory over Wimbledon sandwiched in between the draws, and they now find themselves in an underwhelming 12th place in the English top-flight table.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are up in an impressive fifth place in the table and have won seven of their last nine matches across all competitions, defeating Panathinaikos 4-1 in the Conference League prior to Sunday’s win over Newcastle.

Enzo Maresca’s side advanced to the fourth round of the cup with a comfortable 5-0 win over League Two outfit Barrow last month, in which French forward Christopher Nkunku netted his first hat-trick for the club.

Newcastle Team News

Star winger Anthony Gordon missed the trip to West London on Sunday after suffering a groin injury in training, and it is unknown whether the England international will recover in time for Wednesday’s clash.

Jamaal Lascelles (knee), Sven Botman (knee), Callum Wilson (back), Martin Dubravka (knee) and Kieran Trippier (thigh), meanwhile, are all ruled out due to their respective injury concerns.

Chelsea Team News

A heavily rotated Blues side should see several players that started in the win over Panathinaikos last week return to the lineup, while Jadon Sancho is also expected to start as he is unable to face his parent club, Manchester United, on Sunday.

Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk and Nkunku are in contention to form Chelsea‘s attack alongside Sancho, and Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Tosin Adarabioyo and Marc Cucurella are all options in defence.

The only concerns heading into the clash are with Ben Chilwell (illness) and Omari Kellyman (hamstring), who are both expected to miss out.

Newcastle vs Chelsea Confirmed Lineups

Newcastle Lineup:

Pope; Hall, Krafth, Schar, Kelly; Longstaff, Willock, Joelinton; Willock; Isak, Gordon

Chelsea Lineup:

Jorgensen; Disasi, Badiashile, Adarabioyo, Cucurella; Dewsbury-Hall, Fernandez, Veiga; Felix, Mudryk; Nkunku

Newcastle vs Chelsea Prediction

As they did on Sunday, we at SportsCasting are backing Chelsea to win by a narrow margin to book their place in the Carabao Cup fifth round draw.

Since mid-September, Newcastle’s form has been nothing short of terrible, while the Blues have impressed with wins over the likes of Bournemouth, West Ham, Brighton, Gent, Panathinaikos and, of course, Newcastle.

With changes expected across the Magpies’ lineup and with several key figures ruled out through injury, as well as their poor form of late, we expect in-form Chelsea to come out on top in Tyneside.

Prediction: Newcastle 1-2 Chelsea
