Danny Welbeck’s first-half strike ensured that Brighton left Newcastle with a valuable three points to mark two wins on the bounce.

Brighton entered Saturday’s encounter in the north-east full of confidence following a 3-2 win over Spurs before the international break and Fabian Hurzeler’s side looked like they hadn’t missed a beat.

The only goal of the game came courtesy of Welbeck in the 35th minute, finishing off a tidy one-two with Georginio Rutter to slot home past Nick Pope and put the travelling side ahead.

Welbeck has now scored (72) or assisted (28) 100 Premier League goals – and he has bagged as many league goals this season (five in eight) as he managed in the entirety of the previous campaign (five in 29).

Newcastle’s run of 11 games at home without defeat was put to an abrupt end at St. James’ Park, marking four straight Premier League outings without a win for Eddie Howe’s side.

The result leaves the Magpies inside the top ten on 12 points, five points adrift a spot in the Champions League places as Newcastle eye a return to Europe’s elite.

Brighton are in a much better position to do so, sitting fifth in the standings and just two points away from fourth after eight games – a dazzling start to life for Hurzeler as Seagulls boss.

According to the best football betting sites, Brighton are 10/1 to finish in the top four compared to Newcastle priced at a much shorter 5/1.

The south coast outfit began the season in terrific style with wins over Everton and Manchester United but soon stalled with a run of four games without a win – however they look back on track and ready to compete

Brighton’s victory was overshadowed by what looked a nasty injury to Welbeck, who was stretchered off and required oxygen after suffering a back injury when he clashed with Newcastle defender Fabian Schar.

The winning side will now prepare to take on Wolves at home in Gameweek 9, whilst Newcastle gear up for a trip to the nation’s capital to play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
