Manchester United Injury Update

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has provided an injury update following their 3-0 win over Southampton, amid potential concerns regarding Mattijhs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez, Noussair Mazraoui and Harry Maguire.

After back-to-back defeats in the Premier League, Erik ten Hag and his Manchester United side have bounced back with a mighty 3-0 victory over Southampton at St. Mary’s in Saturday’s early kick-off.

A slow start for the Red Devils saw the hosts gain a golden opportunity to take the lead, with Cameron Archer stepping up to take a penalty, but for Andre Onana to deny the ex-Aston Villa and Sheffield United man with a fine stop.

Just two minutes later, summer signing Mattijhs de Ligt headed United in front, followed by a second courtesy of Marcus Rashford six minutes after that, the England international’s first goal of the 2024/25 campaign.

United had plenty of sights on goal to seal the victory in the second period, but the third goal didn’t come until the 96th minute, when substitute Alejandro Garnacho turned home past Aaron Ramsdale from Diogo Dalot’s cross.

Red Devils fans were, of course, jubilant with their first win since their opening game of the season, however there were concerns over De Ligt and Lisandro Martinez, who were withdrawn early, as well as Noussair Mazraoui and Harry Maguire.

Manchester United Injury Update: “We Have To Assess Today And Tomorrow”

Speaking to BBC Sport on De Ligt and his Player of the Match performance, Ten Hag said: “I’m not surprised. At this moment he is not fit, he’s not at 100% speed. He needs the games to go up to it.

“We see glimpses now, and once he’s there he, will do much better. We are happy with him and especially today with his game.”

De Ligt himself was also asked about a potential injury in his post-match interview after he was forced off in the 87th minute, with the former Bayern Munich and Juventus defender stating: “Yeah, I’m fine. I just had a little cramp in the last five minutes. I wanted to play until the end, but the coach decided to take me off.”

Martinez, as well as Mazraoui and Maguire, who visibly had issues towards the end of the match, were also concerns, and Ten Hag touched on injuries in general within the squad.

“We had internationals early in the season, some are short in the pre-season, some come from intercontinental flights, and then when you have a 12:30 kick-off, you can struggle.

“Hopefully it’s nothing serious, and we have to assess today and tomorrow.”
