Epsom Derby Winner City Of Troy Expected To Run In The Juddmonte International Stakes

In the last 22 runnings of the Juddmonte International Stakes we’ve witnessed three Epsom Derby winners from that year follow-up.

These were Authorized (2007), Sea The Stars (2009) and Australia (2014), so this year’s Derby hero City Of Troy will be looking to become the next to also land the Juddmonte.

Since winning the Epsom Derby, City Of Troy has won the Coral-Eclipse (watch below) and the best UK bookmakers are making him the hot favourite to add another Group One to his tally.

82% Of The Last 22 Juddmonte International Winners Finished 1st or 2nd Last Time

Having finished in the first two in their most recent race has been a decent Juddmonte International Stakes trend to look for – with 18 of the last 22 (82%) ticking this stat.

4 Year-Olds Have The Best Juddmonte International Stakes Records

In terms of age – look no further than the 4 year-olds, who have the best record with 16 wins in the last 22 (73%).

It’s a race that we’ve also seen just 6 winning  year-olds since 2022, which might be seen as a negative for City Of Troy.

With 4 and 5 year-olds winning 15 of the last 22 and there has only been one winning horse aged 6+ (Twice Over, 2011) since the race was first run in 1972.

Previous York Experience Not Essential

16 of the last 22 winners (73%) were having their first run at York too – meaning previous experience of the Knavesmire track is certainly not essential.

Backed up again last year when the winner Mostahdaf was winning at York for the first time.

City Of Troy is yet to race at York.

Juddmonte International Stakes Favourites Have A Great Record

With City Of Troy expected to go off as the warm favourite for the Juddmonte International Stakes – this is also a good sign as 50% of the last 22 market leaders have won.

The most recent was Baaeed in 2022, who won as the 2/5 fav, while we’ve also seen three of the last four market leaders win and five of the last 10.

Respect Trainers Aidan O’Brien and John Gosden

Finally, in terms of trainers to note – look no further than Aidan O’Brien and John Gosden – the pair have won the prize six times in the last 11 runnings.

Gosden has only recently got on the Juddmonte scoresheet, with his first winner coming in 2018 (Roaring Lion) but hasn’t wasted time in catching up with successes in 2021 (Mishriff) and 2023 (Mostahdaf).

O’Brien, who trains City Of Troy, has six wins in total and three of those have come since 2013 with his most recent Japan in 2019.

It’s worth mentioning Sir Michael Stoute too – as the Newmarket handler has six Juddmonte wins too (joint most with O’Brien) but is unlikely to have a runner this year. Meaning if Aidan O’Brien grab another winner here, he’ll become the winning most trainer in the history of the race.
