Wrexham wide man James McClean has responded to Birmingham City fans with a taunting Instagram post after having Bovril thrown at him during Monday night’s League One clash at St. Andrew’s.

Monday evening played host to a major clash in League One, as top of the league Wrexham took on Birmingham City at St. Andrew’s, with the likes of Tom Brady, Rob McElhenney, David Beckham and many more in attendance for the fixture.

Despite the Welsh side taking an early lead through Jack Marriott, the hosts fought back and claimed all three points with a well deserved 3-1 win. Jay Stansfield, whom the Blues signed for a club record fee in excess of £15 million in the summer, scored twice, with Tomoki Iwata scoring the third.

The game wasn’t without its controversy either, as Wrexham forward Paul Mullin seemingly came close to biting one of his opponents but pulled away at the final moment.

And even more drama unfolded when James McClean, who has long been a controversial figure within the English game, was substituted. As the Irishman made his way off the field of play, countless Birmingham fans hurled abuse towards him, with one even throwing a cup of Bovril at the 35-year-old.

McClean was also seen poking fun at a Blues fan’s weight by mimicking a rounded stomach, a fan he later described as a ‘smelly fat gammon’ on his Instagram story, and he continued to taunt the supporters on his way to the bench despite his side being 3-1 down at the time.

Posting on his @macajw Instagram account, McClean provided a taunting response to Birmingham fans with two stories.

In the first, he shared a famous Bobby Sands quote: “They have nothing in their whole imperial arsenal that can break the spirit of an Irishman who doesn’t want to be broken.”

He also added: “P.s fair play to the one old steward that held them all back from getting over the 2ft advertising hoardings.”

McClean then went on to poke fun at the Birmingham fan he was seen taunting in the video from Monday night, saying: “In fairness to this smelly fat gammon, he probs didn’t have the energy or mobility to step over the hoarding.”

Despite the defeat, Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham remain top of the League One table, level on points with Birmingham, however the Blues boast a game in hand on their potential title rivals.

The pair return to league action on Saturday afternoon, with the Red Dragons hosting Crawley at the Racecourse, while Birmingham head to the New York Stadium to take on Rotherham United.

Leading football betting sites heavily favour the Blues to be crowned League One champions come the end of the season at around 8/11, with Huddersfield priced as second favourites at 7/1 and Wrexham as third favourites at around 9/1.
