With England having a new diminutive star in their ranks, many Three Lions fans are wondering just how tall Angel Gomes is after the mini-midfielder made his first start for his country against Finland in the Nations League.

How Tall Is Angel Gomes?

England’s new interim football boss Lee Carsley has introduced a name a lot of Three Lions fans would never have heard of – Angel Gomes.

However, Carsley is very familiar with Gomes – having managed him to win the European Under-21 Championships, so knows exactly what the player is capable of.

But first thing England fans noticed when Angel Gomes made his debut from the bench against the Rep of Ireland on 7th September, was just how tiny the midfielder was.

Prompting some sharp-witted fans to already nickname him – ANGEL ‘GNOMES’.

So – just how tall is Angel Gomes?

He stands at only 168cm tall – or 5ft 6ins to most – and along with the diminutive Nico Lewis at 5f 7ins – comes in as the smallest England player in the current squad.

Who Are Other England Small Players?

Angel Gome’s height of 5ft 6ins will see him rank alongside past England players like Paul Scholes and Shaun Wright-Phillips, who were the same height when they graced the Three Lions shirt.

Now we know how tall Angel Gomes is, this also ranks him just behind former Spurs player Aaron Lennon, who trumps them all – being 5ft 5ins when he was playing for England.

However, there is even one England player that’s smaller.

You have to wade back to the early 1900’s to find another Tottenham player – Fanny Walden, who was capped twice between 1914 and 1922 – measuring in at just 5ft 2ins (157cm) – a full four inches shorter than the Angel Gomes height.

However, after making just 10 appearances for the Red Devils, he was let go – signing for French side Lille in August 2020.

Gomes was then sent out on loan to Portuguese side Boavista for a season, behind coming back to Lille to make their squad.

He’s gone onto play for Lille in the UEFA Champions League and was part of the Lille squad that won the 2021 Trophee des Champions.

On Saturday 7th September Angel Gomes won this first full England cap, when coming off the bench in their 2-0 win.

Gomes impressed enough in that game to then start England’s next match against Finland – playing the full 90 minutes in another 2-0 victory and now looks to be a firm favourite with new interim manager Lee Carsley.
