After being brutally knocked out in the first round of his title fight with Fabio Wardley on Saturday, Frazer Clarke will undergo surgery.Β

Frazer Clarke To Have Surgery After Being KO’d By Fabio Wardley

Burton-born Clarke was hit with a huge right hand (see below) by Wardley in the opening round, leaving him with a dent in the side of his head.

According to Sky Sports, Clarke has a fracture high up on his jaw which is expected to take up to eight weeks to heal.

The bout was supposed to be one of the best of the year in a huge rematch for Wardley’s British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles. However it ended prematurely due to the champion’s brutal early knockout.

When the pair met back in March, the contest ended in a split draw after a Fight of the Year candidate, but Saturday night only lasted two minutes and 28 seconds. Referee Victor Loughlin was forced to step in and stop proceedings with Clarke shook up in the corner of the ring.

Prior to the showdown, the best boxing betting sites had Wardley as the narrow favourite, with Clarke the slight underdog.

Fabio Wardley Sends Message To Frazer Clarke

After retaining his titles, Wardley spoke to the media and sent his best wishes to Clarke: “I always take a prayer before my fight, always ask for me and my opponent to leave and be healthy,

“I want, whoever I’m in with, to go back to their family and I hope he’s well.”

Following his quick win, Wardley is now 18-0-1 as a pro and looks in a strong position to challenge heavyweights inside the top 10.

It’s not yet known what is next in store for Olympic bronze medalist Clarke. However, he may have to take a few months away from the ring to fully heal.

Clarke wasn’t the only fighter who left the Kingdom Arena with an injury on Saturday though. In the second fight of the night, Ben Whittaker was involved in a controversial stoppage which saw his bout with Liam Cameron end early. Whittaker had to be put in a wheelchair after sustaining an injury to his leg (see video below).
