Erling Haaland - Manchester City

Welcome to a new series for the 2024/25 season, provided by Siva & Sam, the twisted minds behind the weekly FPL Banger Podcast.  Below we take you through our FPL Gameweek 6 tips in time for the 2nd round of the campaign.

BEST CAPTAIN

Erling Haaland (£15.3m)

  • Fixture: Newcastle, Away

The worst FPL decision I ever made was to go without Haaland in GW2. The best FPL decision I ever made was to transfer in Haaland on my GW3 Wildcard. I used to live in fear, now I’m sitting pretty with an overall rank of 120k and I don’t spend my football weekends living in fear of a robot.

With 73 Premier League goals in 67 Premier League starts and counting, I’m saying it now, Haaland will be my captain every week from now until GW38. It doesn’t hurt that Newcastle have conceded in every game since GW1, including a 3-1 defeat last week at Arsenal B (Fulham to some of you). Any defence conceding goals to Reiss Nelson has to take a serious look at itself.

TOP PICKS

Robert Sanchez (£4.7m)

  • Fixture: Brighton, Home

Success breeds confidence and this Chelsea side are finally starting to look confident. The highlight of their fortuitous 1-0 over Bournemouth in GW4 was Sanchez saving a penalty from Evanilson. And that wasn’t luck – Sanchez did his homework:

“We always study the opponents. I’ve been looking at him. I can see he changes when the keeper dives early. So, I held, and I knew if I stayed where I was he was going to put it there, so it was a good decision and a good save.”

Sanchez followed that up with a 10 pointer against West Ham, and now plays a Joao Pedro-less Brighton. 3rd double digit haul in a row?

Gabriel Magalhães (£6.1m)

  • Fixture: Leicester, Home

Arsenal have perfected the art of scoring from corner so much that at this point it feels like a FIFA glitch. In-swinging corner into the area, a bunch of 6 footers crowd the goalkeeper and Gabriel has a free header which he inevitably scores. Oh, and by the way, Arsenal keep clean sheets for fun at this point. Gabriel is the literal definition of a season-long pick, select him and Haaland and worry about your other 13 players.

Bryan Mbeumo (£7.2m)

  • Fixture: West Ham, Home

West Ham’s transfer window which saw them spend €144.40m on the likes of Max Kilman, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and 31 year old Niclas Füllkrug feels equivalent to setting a big pile of money on fire. The change in manager hasn’t helped, with 3 defeats in their last 4 games, conceding 12 goals in the process.

Meanwhile Bryan Mbeumo has stepped up in the wake of Ivan Toney’s departure, with 4 goals in 5 games. And it will get even better for Mbeumo once VAR realises that they are allowed to award penalties again.

Havertz (£8.1m)

  • Fixture: Leicester, Home

I made the fairly stupid move of transferring out Kai Havertz in GW4. To be fair it hasn’t gone badly, with 2 blanks in difficult games, but it’s now GW6 and I’m looking at a hit to bring him back. Poor planning on my part, but if anyone can haul against Leicester and Southampton, it will be Kai.

Do not let all this talk of Odegaard being out worry you – Arsenal will have all of the ball against a defensive-minded Leicester and will largely reside in the penalty box, and Havertz will have plenty of opportunities to get forward and make an impact.
