Former Arsenal and Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has stunningly announced his retirement from football at the age of 34.

The Polish international, who spent eight years at Arsenal and seven at Juventus, made the announcement on Instagram, citing the desire to spend more time with his family as the primary reason for his decision.

Szczesny was reportedly in talks with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, potentially earning up to £16 million per year. However, he has chosen to forego these financial incentives in favour of spending more time with his wife and two children.

In his Instagram post, Szczesny reflected on his career, expressing gratitude for the opportunities he had and the people he met. He also thanked the fans for their unwavering support throughout his time in the sport.

In a lengthy statement, Szczesny said, “I left Warsaw, my hometown in June of 2006 to join Arsenal with one dream – to make a living out of football.

“I didn’t just realise my dreams, I’ve arrived where my imagination wouldn’t even dare to take me.

“Today, though my body still feels ready for challenges, my heart is not there anymore.

“I feel that right now it is time to give all of my attention to my family – my amazing wife Marina and our two beautiful children Liam and Noelia.”

While Szczesny’s retirement comes as a surprise, given his recent performances and the potential financial incentives on offer, it is clear that he has made a decision that he believes is right for him.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for the former Poland international, and whether or not he will remain involved in football in some capacity.
