British tennis star Emma Raducanu has been forced to withdraw from this week’s China Open in Beijing after suffering a foot injury at the Korea Open last week.

After having to retire injured from her Korea Open quarter-final clash against Daria Kasatkina in Seoul on Saturday, Britain’s Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from this week’s China Open due to a foot injury.

Raducanu was included in Monday’s draw, in which she was drawn against a qualifier, however the 21-year-old has since taken to social media to confirm that she won’t be able to take part in the tournament after spraining some ligaments in her foot.

“Hello, last week in Seoul I sprained some ligaments in my foot which unfortunately need some more time to heal.” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“It means I can’t play in Beijing but I hope to be back competing as soon as I can.”

Had Raducanu competed and progressed past the first round, she would’ve likely faced Olympic champion and fifth seed Qinwen Zheng in the second round.

The British No. 2’s forced withdrawal comes as a blow to her end-of-season plans, following on from her impressive showing in Seoul, where she defeated China’s Yue Yuan and the United States’ Peyton Stearns, who are both ranked higher in the WTA rankings.

It was Raducanu’s first tennis tournament since suffering a crushing first round defeat at the US Open in late August, a tournament that she famously won as a teenage qualifier in 2021.

Thanks to her performance in Korea, she has risen from 72nd up to 54th in the WTA rankings, her highest position since August 2022, but she now faces a spell on the sidelines before she can attempt to break back into the top 50.

Defending China Open champion and current world No. 1 Iga Swiatek has also withdrawn from the competition due to ‘personal reasons’, leaving the door open for the now top seed Aryna Sabalenka to close the gap in the world rankings.
