Leading German football journalist Christian Falk predicts that the initial backlash against Jurgen Klopp’s move to Red Bull will quickly fade.
Klopp’s Red Bull Decision Sparks Controversy
Despite the controversy surrounding the energy drink company’s involvement in German football, Falk believes that the public’s affection for Klopp will ultimately outweigh any negative sentiment.
In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Falk emphasised that Klopp’s decision to join Red Bull wasn’t driven by financial motivations or a desire for greater power.
Instead, he suggested that Klopp was seeking a less demanding role and a chance to enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle after his intense years at Liverpool.
“I have been working on the story since May, but Jurgen always hesitated – he wasn’t sure he wanted to make that step,” Falk said. “He won’t have to work so hard as he did at Liverpool. He won’t have to watch football every day.”
Falk Predicts A Swift End To The Backlash
Falk acknowledged that Klopp’s move had generated controversy, particularly among fans of his former club, Borussia Dortmund, who have criticised Red Bull’s involvement in German football.
However, he argues that Klopp’s popularity and strong personal connection with German fans will overshadow any concerns about his association with Red Bull.
“It is true; it is controversial. There is a big discussion in Germany at the moment about ‘has he sold his soul?'” Falk said. “I would say no, because Leipzig is a big club.
“Of course it is hard in particular for Dortmund fans because there were big fights, and they have always said it is a tinpot club – it is not traditional.”
Despite the initial backlash, Falk believes that Klopp’s legacy as a beloved figure in German football will ensure that his decision to join Red Bull is quickly forgiven.
He predicts that within a month, the controversy surrounding Klopp’s move will have faded into the background.
