Chelsea Vs Newcastle Preview

Chelsea will be looking to get back to winning ways after their narrow 2-1 defeat to Liverpool in their last Premier League outing.

The Blues looked set for a long afternoon at Anfield when Mo Salah lashed home a first-half penalty. Tosin Adarabioyo was fortunate not to see red for a foul on Diogo Jota when through on goal.

However, Nicolas Jackson scored a fine equaliser in the second period but that was as good as it got for the west Londoners. Curtis Jones struck just a few minutes later to ensure the points stayed on Merseyside.

Enzo Maresca’s side responded in the perfect fashion when they hit Greek outfit Panathinaikos for four in midweek. Mykhailo Mudryk ran riot in Athens and got himself on the scoresheet.

Joao Felix also impressed and both players will be hopeful of starting at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Interestingly, a top four berth is up for grabs if other results go their way.

For Newcastle, they are yet to score in England’s elite division this month. The Magpies lacked a cutting edge at home to Brighton last time out and drew 0-0 with Everton before the international break.

Eddie Howe’s side are without a league win since beating Wolves on GW4. If they fail to take all three points on Sunday, it’ll be five games without a victory.

Nonetheless, Howe has gotten the better of Chelsea on two occasions since taking over at St James’ Park. Both of those victories did occur in the North East, however.

You have to go back to 2012 for the last time the Geordies found league success in west London. A certain Papiss Cissé scored arguably the finest ever Premier League brace in a 2-0 win.

Ahead of the match at Stamford Bridge, the best football betting sites in the UK make the Blues the 4/5 match favourites. The draw can be backed at 17/5 with Howe’s side 7/2.

Chelsea Vs Newcastle Team News

With Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana back from suspension, Chelsea have a fully-fit and available squad to choose from at Stamford Bridge.

Fofana comes back into defence to partner Colwill, with Cucurella on the bench. Madueke, Palmer and Pedro Neto will fill in behind Jackson up front.

Meanwhile, Callum Wilson has suffered an injury setback for Newcastle. The forward is set to miss the next three games as he recovers from a back complaint.

The likes of Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles and Martin Dubravka will also miss out. Defender Dan Burn is available after suffering a knock against Brighton last time out.

Alexander Isak is set to lead the line at Stamford Bridge. The Sweden international will be supported by Almiron and Harvey Barnes, with Anthony Gordon ruled out through a groin issue.

Chelsea Vs Newcastle Confirmed Lineups

Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Sanchez; James, Fofana, Colwill, Gusto; Lavia, Caicedo; Madueke, Palmer, Pedro Neto; Jackson

Newcastle (4-3-3): Pope; Livramento, Schar, Burn, Hall; Joelinton, Tonali, Guimaraes; Barnes, Isak, Almiron

Chelsea Vs Newcastle Prediction

Chelsea will be confident of getting back to winning ways against toothless Newcastle on Sunday afternoon. The Magpies haven’t won at Stamford Bridge in 12 years and it’s hard to see that changing on GW9.

Enzo Maresca has only tasted defeat on home soil once since taking over in the summer. That came on the opening weekend against champions Manchester City.

Prediction: Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle
