Penalty Shootout Victory Sends Bees Through To Fifth Round

Fresh off the back of an eventful 4-3 comeback win against Ipswich at the weekend, Brentford return to the Gtech Community Stadium for a Carabao Cup fourth round clash against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night.

Thomas Frank confirmed that he’d be fielding a strong starting XI against the Owls in his pre-match press conference, and he did exactly that, handing starts to the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Nathan Collins, Mark Flekken and Vitaly Janelt.

It didn’t take long for the hosts to open the scoring either, as Kevin Schade turned home into an empty net after initially missing a one-on-one 10 minutes in, which came courtesy of a lovely first-time flick-on from Keane Lewis-Potter.

Despite going down so early, the Owls held their own and sustained the hosts’ pressure for the remainder of the first half, seeing them head into the midway point just one goal behind.

12 minutes into the second period, French winger Djeidi Gassama drew the Championship side level with a long-range effort past Flekken into the bottom left corner.

Brentford brought the likes of Mikkel Damsgaard, Yoane Wissa and Mads Roerslev on in search of a winner, but after a goalless remainder to the second period, it was penalties that would decide the outcome of the tie.

Nine consecutive goals from the spot handed the Bees a 5-4 advantage in the shootout, and unfortunately for Sheffield Wednesday, Liam Palmer’s penalty was palmed away by Flekken, ensuring Brentford’s advancement to the final eight.
