What Are The Main York Ebor Festival 2024 Races?

Across the four day York Ebor Festival there many top races – including three Group One contests and the Ebor Handicap, which is staged on the final day.

Wednesday – Juddmonte International (Group One)

All eyes will be on this year’s Epsom Derby winner City Of Troy as he’s the star name on show in the Juddmonte International Stakes on day one.

This Aidan O’Brien runner will be looking to the Ballydoyle trainer his seventh win in this top York Group One race and if he can he’ll become the outright winning-most trainer in the race.

City Of Troy was last seen in action winning the Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown and will be looking to become the first horse to win both the Juddmonte and Epsom Derby in the same season since Australia in 2014.

12 months ago, horse racing fans witnessed Frankie Dettori steering home the John & Thady Gosden-trained Mostahdaf to land the lucrative £708,875 first prize (watch below).

Thursday – Yorkshire Oaks (Group One)

The Yorkshire Oaks is the second Group One contest at the York Ebor Festival – a middle distance race that gives the fillies a chance to shine.

In 2023, we saw a crackerjack of a renewal with Warm Heart getting the better of Free Wind – a win that gave trainer Aidan O’Brien his third success in the last four years and his seventh in total. He needs two more to equal the record trainer hauls of both Mathew Dawson and Sir Michael Stoute – who are locked on 9 wins each.

This year, the Ralph Beckett-trained Bluestocking is one of the leading fancies, who was last seen running second in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot at the end of July.

Friday – Nunthorpe Stakes (Group One)

The best sprinters from around the world are often targeted at the Nunthorpe Stakes – a race legendary jockey Lester Piggott won a record seven times.

12 months ago, Live In The Dream (watch below) provided trainer Adam West with a memorable win in the race and is expected to be back for more in 2024. If he can defend his title, he’ll join the likes of Borderlescott, Battaash and Mecca’s Angel – who are all repeat winners since 2009.

Saturday – The Ebor Handicap Is The Richest Flat Handicap Race In Europe

With £300,000 on offer to the winner of the Ebor Handicap, it’s the richest flat handicap race in Europe and, therefore, it’s no shock it’s a super-competitive race each season.

Last year in 2023 we saw Frankie Dettori win the race on Absurde for trainer Willie Mullins (watch below). The win provided the pocket Italian with third in the race and his second on the spin. However, Dettori won’t be back in 2024 as he’s now riding in the US.

Trainer John Gosden also has a good recent record in the race – winning the pot in 2018 and in 2022, so anything the Newmarket handler runs should be respected.

While it’s also been a top race for the Irish in recent times – with 50% of the last 10 runnings going back across the Irish Sea.
