This week’s big DP World Tour golf event is the Open de Espana, in Madrid, and the field has been boosted with LIV golfer Jon Rahm returning to his homeland to play in an event he’s won three times in the past.

Jon Rahm Eyes Fourth Open De Espana Title in Madrid This Week

Fresh from winning the lucrative LIV golf individual prize in 2024, top Spanish golfer Jon Rahm is back in DP World Tour action this week in the Open de Espana.

It’s an event Jon Rahm is very familiar with too – having won the title three times in the past – and needs just one more win to surpass Spanish golf legend Seve Ballesteros, who also won the Spanish Open three times.

Rahm pocketed an incredible $18m bonus for winning the 2024 LIV Golf Tour too, so the Open de Espana prize money of $552,500 to the winner might be small change to the Spainard.

But being played in his home country you feel it’s more of a ‘pride thing’ for Rahm to play.

The best golf betting sites in the UK are also taking no chances on Jon Rahm winning another Open de Espana though. Making him the clear favourite in the market.

This week’s Open de Espana also carries 1500 Ryder Cup points and with the LIV golf season over, Rahm is also expected to stay on the DP Tour to play in the Dunhill Championship and Andalucia Masters next month.

With means, along with his Olympic appearance, Rahm would have played in enough events to keep his tour membership and also still be in Ryder Cup contention for 2025.

Rahm Last Won The Open De Espana In 2022

It was only two years ago (2022) that Jon Rahm won his most recent Open De Espana, taking just 259 shot and shooting -25, which also stands as the tournament record.

Rahm saw off Frenchman Matthieu Pavon that day by six strokes. However, Pavon made amends in 2023 by winning the Open de Espana with a score of -23 and will also be back in 2024 to defend his title.

The other two wins for Jon Rahm in this event came in 2018 and 2019, in which he saw off fellow countryman Rafa Cabrera-Bello by 5 shots.

Cabrera Bello, however, went onto win the 2021 renewal though.

In fact, this DP World Tour event has been won four times in the last five runnings by a Spanish player.

Plus, if you go back further, it’s also sees Miguel Angel Jimenez (2014), Alvaro Quiros (2010), Sergi Garcia (2002) win.

While since the Open de Espana was first played in 1912, there have been 18 Spanish winners.
