Erik ten Hag and his Manchester United side welcome Eredivisie outfit FC Twente to Old Trafford in their Europa League opener on Wednesday evening, and we’ve got the latest in terms of team news and predicted line-ups.

Off the back of a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace at the weekend, Manchester United kickstart their Europa League campaign on Wednesday night against Eredivisie side FC Twente, who finished third in the Dutch top flight last term.

The Red Devils, meanwhile, finished eighth in the Premier League but secured qualification to Europe’s second-tier competition by winning the FA Cup. Erik ten Hag’s side memorably beat rivals Manchester City 2-1 in the final.

Heading into continental action, it’s been a mixed start for United domestically. They have won just two of their opening five Premier League matches, beating Fulham and Southampton, drawing against Palace, and losing to Liverpool and Brighton. Elsewhere, they defeated Barnsley 7-0 in the Carabao Cup third round last week.

As for FC Twente, despite the disappointment of missing out on the league phase of the Champions League after losing to RB Salzburg in the play-off round, they’ve enjoyed a strong start to the 2024/25 season.

Managed by Joseph Oosting, the Tukkers find themselves in fourth place after six league games, having won three, drawn two and lost just one. Their sole domestic defeat thus far came at the hands of Utrecht, who are third in the table, at the start of September, and their most recent fixture ended in a 5-0 triumph over Almere City.

The Red Devils have suffered numerous injury blows already this term, and while many have returned from their respective concerns, summer signing Leny Yoro remains ruled out with a foot issue.

Luke Shaw (calf), Tyrell Malacia (knee) and Victor Lindelof (toe) are all doubts for the clash too, however Malacia and Lindelof have returned to first-team training, so they could be in contention for some sort of involvement.

There may also be returns to the line-up for Rasmus Hojlund and Mason Mount, who have both recently recovered from injuries of their own. The pair were named in the matchday squad against Palace at the weekend, and Hojlund made his first appearance of the campaign as a 76th-minute substitute.

The visitors will be without two first-team players for the trip to Manchester on Wednesday night, with Michael Sadilek and Younes Taha both missing out due to leg injuries.

Oosting isn’t expected to make any drastic changes to his line-up for this one, and 22-year-old Sem Steijn is undoubtedly one to keep an eye on, as the attacking midfielder has seven goals and one assist in his last six competitive appearances.
