Who is Jamie Gittens

He’s the latest edition in what seems to be a conveyor belt of English talent coming through at Borussia Dortmund – But who is Jamie Gittens?

In 2018, Jadon Sancho first began making waves in the yellow and black of Dortmund. Then came Jude Bellingham a few years later.

Now, a new English youngster is making headlines for the German giants.

Born in August 2004, Jamie Gittens has only just turned 20 years old. But despite his young age, he’s found himself deservedly in the spotlight after some stellar performances.

On Wednesday night, Dortmund brought him off the bench with the scores level in their Champions League opener against Club Brugge.

The England youth international lit up a previously dull fixture, scoring twice to help his side to a 3-0 victory.

His second was an absolute stunner. The winger cut in onto his right foot after several step-overs, before unleashing a clinical low strike.

He was subsequently named player of the match, and could have scored a hat-trick if he’d been allowed to take a late penalty.

Remarking on the youngster’s talent, Ex-Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock told the BBC: “Electric, the speed he has, the movement of the hips, as a defender it is your worst nightmare,

“You can’t get anywhere near him, such is the speed of feet.”

And this isn’t the first time he’s lit up a match for Dortmund this season. Gittens scored a late brace to earn his side a 2-0 victory over Frankfurt in August.

But repeating the feat in the Champions League will have plenty sitting up to take note, including interim senior England boss Lee Carsley.

Jamie Gittens Career Stats

Born in London, Jamie Jermaine Bynoe-Gittens spent time as a child with both Reading and Chelsea.

At age 14, he opted to sign a youth contract with Manchester City. After two years in the City academy, he moved to Dortmund in 2020, following in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho.

Despite struggling with injuries and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, Gittens eventually excelled for Dortmund’s youth side, scoring six goals in four games in 2021/22.

This earned him a call-up to the first team, where he made his debut in the Bundesliga against Wolfsburg in April 2022.

His first Bundesliga goal came in August 2022 in a 3-1 win at Freiburg.

After signing a long-term contract a few days later, he went on to make his Champions League debut in February 2023, as Dortmund beat Chelsea 1-0 in the Round-of-16.

His first Champions League goal was against AC Milan in November 2023. Gittens also came off the bench in the 2024 Champions League final, as Dortmund lost 2-0 to Real Madrid.

To date, Gittens has played 63 senior matches for Borussia Dortmund, scoring nine goals with nine assists.

Primarily a left winger, he can also play on the right and has occasionally operated through the middle.

An age-grade player for England since 2019, he has played every age group from U15 up to U21, for whom he has scored once in nine appearances.
