Former British No. 1 Tim Henman has made a bold prediction for the 2024 US Open, backing Alexander Zverev to claim his first Grand Slam title.

Zverev’s Recent Form and Near-Misses Make Him a Contender

Despite the dominance of Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, and Carlos Alcaraz, Henman believes Zverev’s consistent level of play and recent near-misses make him a strong contender for the championship.

Zverev, a two-time Grand Slam runner-up, has been knocking on the door of a major title for several years. His impressive performances in recent tournaments, including a strong showing at the French Open, have solidified his status as one of the best players in the world without a Grand Slam win.

Henman, who has witnessed Zverev’s progress firsthand, believes that the German’s time to shine has finally arrived. “I just think Zverev is under the radar,” he said.

“I think Zverev’s level of play is underrated. When he is playing averagely, that keeps him in the top 10. I just feel that he has been knocking on the door for so long, that door is going to open.”

Henman’s Bold Prediction

While Djokovic, Alcaraz, and Sinner are all considered favourites to win the US Open, Henman’s prediction adds an intriguing element to the tournament.

Zverev’s recent form and his ability to compete at the highest level make him a potential dark horse in the race for the title.

However, Henman does have reservations about Sinner’s chances due to his recent injury and the distraction of the doping allegations.

“I didn’t pick Sinner because of his hip in Cincinnati,” Henman explained. “When you think then coming into a Grand Slam, best of five set matches, over two weeks. Seven victories he’d need. I think it’s unlikely.”

As the US Open progresses, tennis fans will be eagerly watching to see if Tim Henman’s prediction comes true. Zverev faces Tomás Martín Etcheverry in the third round on Friday.
