Football transfer correspondent David Ornstein has revealed that Manchester United’s Scott McTominay is expected to arrive in Italy today (Tuesday, August 27), looking to complete his £25 million move to Napoli.

David Ornstein Transfer Update: Napoli Advancing On McTominay Deal

Much has been discussed over Scott McTominay’s potential Manchester United exit over the past week or so, but the short-lived saga now looks to be nearing its end, as the Scotsman is close to finalising a move to 2022/23 Serie A champions Napoli.

This is according to The Athletic‘s football transfer expert David Ornstein, who reports that McTominay is expected to travel to Italy today (Tuesday, August 27), with a view to completing his rumoured £25 million move to Naples.

Ornstein reports that an agreement in principle is in place between Manchester United and Napoli, with the Premier League side retaining a sell-on fee for their academy product, and that the Italian side and McTominay are advancing towards completion in regards to personal terms.

The news comes amid Manuel Ugarte’s rumoured move to the Red Devils from Paris Saint-Germain for a fee exceeding £50 million, including add-ons, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that United have agreed a deal with PSG to sign the Uruguay international midfielder.

United had initially been hesitant to allow McTominay to depart, it has been reported, however they couldn’t guarantee that he’d play the minutes that he wanted over the course of the season.

As well, due to the fact that McTominay has come through their academy system, his sale represents ‘pure profit’. This will provide a major boost to United’s aims to comply with financial regulations set in place by both the Premier League and UEFA.

There had also been Premier League interest for McTominay earlier in the summer, with Fulham lodging a £20 million bid, but after United rejected their advances due to the offer being below their valuation, the Cottagers signed Sander Berge from Burnley instead.

McTominay Departs After Making Over 250 United Appearances

Since making his first team debut for the club back in 2017 as a 20-year-old, Lancaster-born McTominay has made a total of 255 appearances for his boyhood side across all competitions, netting a total of 29 goals across that time.

His best campaign of the lot came last season, where he scored 10 goals in 43 matches for the Red Devils, which was followed by him representing Scotland at the 2024 European Championship in Germany, in which he scored one of his nation’s two goals at the tournament.

During his time with the first team at Old Trafford, McTominay won the FA Cup in 2023/24, along with two second-place finishes in 2017/18 and 2022/23, won the Carabao Cup in 2022/23, and finished as a runner-up in the Europa League in 2020/21.
