Youngest Premier League Managers

With Manchester United linked with 39-year-old Ruben Amorim, we’ve ranked the youngest Premier League managers to see how the Portuguese boss compares.

While football management is a job that often takes years of experience to excel in, younger coaches are increasingly taking on roles at massive clubs.

Few tasks in world football are as big as managing Manchester United. With that in mind, many United fans might be concerned about a manager as young as Amorim coming in.

But while the Sporting CP boss would become United’s youngest manager in the Premier League era, he only just makes the top fifty youngest Premier League managers ever.

At 39 years, six months and two days old at the time of writing, Amorim would be the 50th youngest Premier League boss if he took the job now.

And he wouldn’t even be in the top 50 if he’s not in charge of his first game within the next two weeks.

That’s because former Scotland, Celtic and Southampton manager, Gordon Strachan, managed his first game for Coventry City in 1996, aged 39 years, six months and 15 days.

Neither Amorim or Strachan come close to the youngest ever, though. That honour belongs to Ryan Mason.

Mason has twice been interim manager for Tottenham, and still works as an assistant coach.

He first took charge of Spurs in April 2021, aged just 29.

Below, we have ranked the 20 youngest Premier League managers of all time on the date of their first match.

The youngest current manager is Brighton’s Fabian Hürzeler. The German took charge of his first Premier League match on 17 August 2024, aged 31 years, five months and 22 days.

The only other managers under 40 in the Premier League at present were both promoted to the division this season.

Russell Martin and Kieran McKenna, both 38, guided Southampton and Ipswich Town to the top flight last year.

It’s not been an easy start for either, though. Both Ipswich and Southampton are currently winless and occupying the relegation places.
