John Stones Wolves

Fans across the Premier League have been left furious after Manchester City star, John Stones, scored a controversial last-minute winner against Wolves.

The England international secured all three points for Manchester City in the 94th minute, as Stones latched onto a Phil Foden corner to head the ball past Jose Sa.

However, Bernardo Silva appeared to be impacting the Wolves goalkeepers ability to make a save whilst being in an offside position.

After an on-field review the goal was awarded, as the officials deemed Silva’s involvement to be within the rules of the game and this has left fans furious.

Stones has become somewhat of a last-minute hero for City in recent weeks, scoring a late leveller for Pep Guardiola’s side against Arsenal and now with a winner against Wolves.

This comes after a controversial game week in general for Premier League officials, as many Arsenal fans were furious with the red card that was handed to William Saliba in the Gunners’ 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth.

The Frenchman was sent off for a foul on Bournemouth striker, Evanilson, that appeared to stop the Brazilian from obtaining a goal scoring opportunity.

What Are The Offside Rules In The Premier League?

The John Stones controversy has caused some supporters to question what is and what is not offside and the rules state that a player will be penalised if they are:

  • Preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision
  • Challenging an opponent for the ball
  • Clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent
  • Making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball

Fans React To Controversial John Stones Goal Against Wolves

Former Watford, West Brom and Manchester United goalkeeper believes the goal should not have stood as Bernardo Silva disrupted the Wolves goalkeeper’s set position.

In contrast, several Premier League spectators feel the goal was rightly allowed and Bernardo Silva was not involved at the time of Stones’ contact.

And finally, some supporters were questioning the consistency from the Premier League officials, using Jonny Evans’ disallowed goal against Burnley as an example.
