Top jumps trainer Nicky Henderson played second fiddle to Willie Mullins last season, but the Seven Barrows handler has made one move to try and close the gap on the Irish handler by acquiring the 2024 German Derby winner Palladium to run over the jumps for him this season.

Palladium Sold For £1.2m To Become The Most Expensive Jumps Recruit EVER

Having been trained by Henk Grewe in Germany, Palladium cemented his name into that countries horse racing hall of fame in the summer by winning the German Derby at Hamburg on July 7th (watch below).

The 3 year-old has since finished last in a Group One Preis von Europa at Cologne, but that hasn’t stopped his new buyers from forking out a staggering £1.2m (€1.4m) to purchase him at the recent sales in France.

This mega-buy now gives Palladium the tag of being the most expensive horse to be sent over jumps, with Nicky Henderson the stable that’s been tasked with turning the German Derby winner into a jumping great.

Palladium, who is sired by the 2015 2000 Guineas winner Gleneagles, beat the previous record jumps buy – Regent’s Stroll, who went for £660,00 at the Goffs Summer Sale in July and is with the Paul Nicholls camp.

All eyes will now be on which ‘stage’ Henderson first introduces Palladium on – but before all that, some extensive schooling over the sticks will be the first task for the horse.

However, despite never jumping a hurdle in public, the best horse racing betting sites in the UK are already making him 25/1 for the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March – a race trainer Nicky Henderson has won seven times and more times than any other handler.
