Ryder Cup

With 97 years of history emotions can often run high at the Ryder Cup – not only with the players, but also amongst the loyal golf supporters – who have had a record of going a bit ‘over the top’ when cheering on their countries.

Therefore, ahead of the 2025 Ryder Cup in the US, it’s been recently announced that officials will roll out a new plan to control crowd issues, which will hopefully reduce or avoid the patriotic golf chants that have sometimes marred the event.

Ryder Cup To Introduce Strategy To Prevent Crowd Trouble At 2025 Event

In a recent Ryder Cup press conference, USA Captain Keegan Bradley lifted the lid on a new strategy the Ryder Cup bosses will have in place for 2025, in order to curb any crowd trouble that has crept into the event in recent runnings

Ryder Cup golf fans know that having home territory is a big advantage and a lot of this is down to the crowd – not only getting behind their players, but also getting on the backs of the oppo.

No different that the home and away scenario at football matches – but in the Ryder Cup’s example it’s like having a 13th man in your corner.

However, the sport of golf also prides itself on etiquette and in recent Ryder Cup tournaments the crowd banter and sledging as often stepped over the mark.

With the most famous incident being in the 1999 renewal billed the ‘Battle Of Brookline’ when the US team ran onto the green prematurely after Justin Leonard sunk a huge putt – but Europe’s Jose Maria Olazabal was still to putt (watch below).

More recently Europe stormed to Ryder Cup victory in Rome in 2023, after getting big support from the home crowd. While two years prior to that the Covid-hit 2021 event in the US saw the home fans outnumbering the Europeans due to the travel restrictions.

Therefore, despite the 2025 Ryder Cup still over 10 months away, officials are already looking ahead to the event and how they can prevent fans from getting out of hand at Bethpage.

What Date Is The 2025 Ryder Cup?

📅Date: September 26th-28th 2025
🏌️Course: Bethpage Black Course, New York
📺 TV: Sky Sports

At this stage the best golf betting sites in the UK are making the USA team the slight favourites – but there is not a lot in it.

What Are The New Ryder Cup Crowd Restrictions?

Tournament officials at the Ryder Cup has announced they will have their own people (observers) in with the crowd at Bethpage, which will not only act as a deterrent to any fans wanting to shout out “Get In The Hole” when a player drives on a par 5, but they will also have the authority to kick out any fans that step out of line.

Keegan went onto say.

“The PGA of America has things in place for each group to monitor the situation and if you act inappropriately, you’re going to be asked to leave the tournament.

“I hope and expect the fans will respect what the guys are doing but also at the same time be lively and supporting our team.

“It’s really important to us, the US side, that it’s a fair place to play for both teams. Nobody on either team wants this to get uncomfortable or weird out there.

“But listen, you come into Yankee Stadium, you come into Madison Square Garden, it’s a tough place to play. And Luke and the boys know that.

“I have total faith in the fans of New York to cheer on their team proudly and loudly.

“I don’t want them to cross the line, to do anything that would affect the course of play but it’s going to be a tough atmosphere.

“They’re going to be loud, they’re going to be passionate and the PGA of America’s going to do a great job making sure everything’s right.”

Europe’s Ryder Cup Captain Luke Donald Welcomes The Changes

Luke Donald, who guided the European Ryder Cup team to victory in Rome last time, has also ‘chipped-in’ with the new crowd measures.

Welcoming the plans and saying that both teams want to win “the right way”.

He added – “We’ve all seen Ryder Cups where it has crossed the line.

“It’s the responsibility of the PGA of America to have protocols and a plan in place.

“Keegan and I like to do things the right way, win fairly and squarely. We want the best team to win in a passionate and spirited high energy environment.
