Umpire Scoring Error

A bizarre scoring error by an umpire at the Shanghai Masters gave Flavio Cobolli the edge as he came from behind to defeat veteran Stan Wawrinka to book his place in the third round.

Monday’s Shanghai Masters clash between Flavio Cobolli and Stan Wawrinka was blighted by an extraordinary scoring error from umpire Carlos Bernardes in what proved to be a significant moment as the young Italian came from behind to defeat the Swiss veteran 6-7 (6) 7-6 (4) 6-3.

The error came in the third set after the second point of the second game was scored, with Bernardes calling 0-30 in favour of Cobolli, who led the set 1-0 at the time, when the scoreline should have been called as 15-15.

Bernardes logged the first point correctly, calling 0-15 in favour of Wawrinka on the tannoy but then spoke into his walkie-talkie to ask for some electrolytes for Cobolli, which seemingly caused the distraction.

Cobolli won the next point, with Wawrinka unable to provide a response to his soft drop shot, and instead of calling a level game at 15-15, the 61-year-old umpire logged the score as 0-30.

Surprisingly, neither player noticed the mistake, or anyone in the venue for that matter, and play continued as normal.

Wawrinka then went on to win a point to make it 15-30 before world No. 30 Cobolli won a further two points to secure the critical break of serve, the only one in the third set to go 2-0 up.

22-year-old Cobolli then secured the victory against the three-time Grand Slam winner, booking a third-round matchup against former world No. 1 Novak Djokovic on Tuesday.

The UK’s best tennis betting sites heavily favour Djokovic to come up trumps in the third round at a price of around 1/10, while Cobolli is rated at around 6/1 to cause an upset against the Serbian.

Meanwhile, tournament favourites Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have already booked their spots in Wednesday’s fourth round. Sinner will face American Ben Shelton for a place in the quarter-finals, as Alcaraz takes on France’s Gael Monfils.
