British No. 1 Jack Draper has been forced to withdraw from the upcoming Shanghai Masters after suffering an abdominal injury at the Japan Open in Tokyo.

22-year-old British tennis star Jack Draper has withdrawn from the Shanghai Masters, due to start on Wednesday, 2 October, due to an abdominal injury suffered at the Japan Open in Tokyo on Sunday.

Draper, the current British No. 1, reached the quarter-finals in Tokyo, where he eventually retired from the match against France’s Ugo Humbert after receiving treatment for the abdominal issue.

It was the youngster’s first ATP tournament since exiting the US Open at the semi-final stage earlier this month and followed on from his two defeats at the Davis Cup while representing Great Britain just over two weeks ago.

Draper’s camp has revealed that they don’t know the extent of his injury as of yet but have cited the turnaround from Tokyo to Shanghai as too quick, therefore leaving no option but to withdraw.

The Sutton-born star had received a bye to the second round where he would have faced either Hugo Gaston or Jaume Munar, and his withdrawal comes as a major blow, as the Shanghai Masters is the highest-ranked regular tournament in tennis after the four major Grand Slams.

His injury and subsequent withdrawal from the tournament in Shanghai come just weeks after his complaints about the “mental” tennis calendar, which he described as “mentally and physically challenging”.

If Draper is able to return to full fitness in time, he will next take part in the Vienna Open in Austria in three weeks time on Monday, 21 October.
