The University of Oklahoma has agreed to a new six-year contract with football coach Brent Venables that includes a “significant raise” and adds two additional seasons, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
Brent Venables’ six-year deal worth $51.6 million will keep him with Oklahoma through the 2029 season
The new contract was approved by the Oklahoma board of regents on Friday. Norman’s new multi-year deal will keep him in Norman through the 2029 season. Sources confirmed that his new deal has a total value of $51.6 million.
Oklahoma allotted the raise to Venables in part due to “an uptick in overall program commitment” during his tenure.
Venables, 53, is set to earn $7.225 million in 2024 and $7.625 million in 2025, before topping out at $7.925 million in the final year. He signed a six-year, $43.5 million contract when he agreed to coach the Sooners in December 2021.

Venables is coming off a 10-3 season and is 16-10 in two years at Oklahoma. The college football coach secured a top-10 recruiting class in 2024 and has the No. 7 class in ESPN’s latest 2025 class rankings.
According to 247Sports, the Oklahoma recruiting classes for both 2024 and 2025 both rank among the top 10 in college football. The 2024 class is headlined by five-star defensive lineman David Stone.
Furthermore, Venables was a longtime successful assistant coach and coordinator at Kansas State (1993-1998), Oklahoma (1999-2011), and Clemson (2012-2021). He has coached in eight national championship games.
Venables is 16-10 in the regular season, 10-8 in the Big 12, and 0-2 in bowl games with the Sooners.
Venables served under Bill Snyder at Kansas State, Bob Stoops at Oklahoma, and Dabo Swinney at Clemson.
In December 2021, he accepted the Oklahoma job and became the football program’s 23rd head coach, replacing Lincoln Riley after his departure to become the head coach at the University of Southern California (USC).
During Venables’ second season, the Sooners managed to upset No. 3 Texas in the Red River Rivalry game. Oklahoma completed the regular season with a 69-45 win over TCU before losing to Arizona in the Alamo Bowl. The Sooners finished 10-3 in their final season in the Big 12.
After two seasons with the Sooners, Venables is also 10-8 in the Big 12 and 0-2 in bowl games.
Entering the 2024 season, Oklahoma will make its debut in the SEC, with a schedule that includes road games at Ole Miss, Missouri, and LSU. It also includes the traditional neutral-site game against Texas. The home schedule includes Alabama, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
Additionally, Jackson Arnold is slated to take over as starting quarterback in an offense run by new quarterback coach and offensive coordinator Seth Littrell.
The board also extended defensive line coach Todd Bates and offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh.
