NFL: AFC Divisional Round-Kansas City Chiefs at Buffalo Bills

The race for the Super Bowl is on, but that title won’t be won until February.

In the meantime, SportsCasting has decided to crown a different type of champion.

Most NFL players jumped onto the radar during high school, and so we wondered: which state has the most talented collection of prep products?

It’s no surprise to see states like California, Texas, Georgia, Alabama and Florida in the mix, but who takes the cake?

There were 23 states that had at least 22 high school alums on Kickoff Weekend rosters – enough for a starting lineup – and we ranked them all.

23. Wisconsin

Offense

QB: Braelon Allen
RB: Dare Ogunbowale
FB: Alec Ingold
TE: Jake Ferguson
T: Jon Gaines
G: Kevin Zeitler
C: Tyler Biadasz
G: Quinn Meinerz
T: Cole Van Lanen
Jumbo TE: Logan Bruss
WR: Hunter Luepke

Defense

DE: Will McDonald
DT: Shelby Harris
DT: Keeanu Benton
DT: Leo Chanel
DE: T.J. Watt
ILB: Zack Baun
ILB: Nick Bellore
ILB: Kristian Welch
CB: Ben Bredeson
S: Eric Murray
CB: Luke Goedeke

Specialists

LS: Tyler Biadasz
P: Braelon Allen
K: Braelon Allen

Analysis: Look, it’s T.J. Watt! Now please don’t look anywhere else, especially at an offense that has no quarterback, a secondary that has two offensive linemen as cornerbacks, or a special teams unit with no kicker. An easy choice to start things off.

22. Indiana

Offense

QB: Terry McLaurin
RB: Carson Steele
RB: Isaac Guerendo
Jumbo TE: Michael Jerrell
T: Blake Fisher
G: Zack Martin
C: Ted Karras
G: Joe Tippmann
T: Dawand Jones
TE: Peyton Hendershot
WR: Ben Skowronek

Defense

DE: Austin Booker
DT: Braden Fiske
DT: Sheldon Day
DE: George Karlaftis
ILB: Drue Tranquill
ILB: Pete Werner
CB: Julius Brents
S: Jeremy Chinn
S: Jessie Bates
S: Lonnie Johnson
CB: Russ Yeast

Specialists

LS: Ted Karras
P: Terry McLaurin
K: Terry McLaurin

Analysis: Good news: Indiana has enough players to field a team. Bad news: no quarterback and a major shortage of skill players. We’ll let Scary Terry take the snaps and hope for the best.

21. Tennessee

Offense

QB: Tony Pollard
RB: Kenneth Walker
WR: Tee Higgins
TE: Dawson Knox
T: Graham Barton
G: Shaq Mason
C: Lucas Patrick
G: Tanner Hudson
T: Trey Smith
WR: AD Mitchell
WR: Van Jefferson

Defense

DE: Patrick Johnson
DT: Derek Barnett
DE: Jalen Reeves-Maybin
ILB: Cam Jones
ILB: George Odum
ILB: Junior Colson
CB: Alontae Taylor
S: Harrison Smith
S: Thomas Harper
S: Theo Jackson
CB: Jalen Ramsey

Specialists

LS: Morgan Cox
P: Tee Higgins
K: Tee Higgins

Analysis: It’s actually a decent collection of skill guys and some decent offensive linemen, but another state without a quarterback. Jalen Ramsey can only do so much on defense, and the lack of a kicker is also a big deal.

20. Nevada

 Offense

QB: Rhamondre Stevenson
WR: Brandon Aiyuk
TE: Dalton Kincaid
T: Ronnie Stanley
G: Will Hernandez
C: Austin Corbett
G: Nick Gates
T: Troy Fautanu
TE: Daniel Bellinger
WR: Rome Odunze
WR: Cedric Tillman

Defense

DE: Kyle Van Noy
DT: Jonah Laulu
DT: Darnell Washington
DE: Adisa Isaac
LB: Tony Fields
LB: Brevin Jordan
LB: Edefuan Ulofoshio
CB: Miles Killebrew
S: Jaden Hicks
S: Jordan Howden
CB: Jalen Nailor

Specialists

LS: Austin Corbett
P: Rome Odunze
K: Rome Odunze

Analysis: This offense doesn’t have a quarterback, but the rest of the personnel has some star power. The defense is a wasteland, and there are multiple offensive players that have been plugged in on that side of the ball; and, again, no kicker.

19. Utah

Offense

QB: Puka Nacua
RB: Jaylen Warren
TE: Dalton Schultz
T: Garett Bolles
G: Jackson Powers-Johnson
C: Andre James
G: Kingsley Suamataia
T: Penei Sewell
Jumbo TE: Braxton Jones
WR: Britain Covey
WR: Simi Fehoko

Defense

DE: Brady Christensen
DT: Taki Taimani
DT: Khyiris Tonga
DE: Jay Tufele
ILB: Cody Barton
ILB: Nick Vigil
ILB: Noah Sewell
CB: Kaden Ellis
S: Julian Blackmon
S: Zayne Anderson
CB: Dallin Holker

Specialists

LS: Andre James
P: Matt Gay
K: Matt Gay

Analysis: Utah only has 24 players, but this is actually a decent squad. The offensive line is quite good, and it will need to be as we run a lot of Wildcat with Puka and Jaylen Warren. The defense is a mess, but Utah does have a kicker, which is a huge plus.

18. Maryland

Offense

QB: Deonte Hardy
RB: Ty Johnson
WR: Stefon Diggs
WR: John Metchie
T: Christian Darrisaw
G: Zion Johnson
C: Olusegun Oluwatimi
G: Rob Havenstein
T: Rasheed Walker
WR: Jordan Addison
WR: Mack Hollins

Defense

DE: Chop Robinson
DT: Josh Pascal
DT: Chase Young
DE: Arnold Ebiketie
ILB: Ja’Whuan Bentley
CB: Tre’von Diggs
CB: Deonte Banks
S: Rodney McLeod
S: John Johnson
CB: Kendall Fuller
CB: Ronald Darby

Specialists

LS: Andrew DePaola
P: Jamie Gillan
K: Jamie Gillan

Analysis: Stefon and Tre’Von  Diggs are from Maryland, which gives this team some juice, and the offensive line is really solid. The defense is good and the offense has skill guys, but Maryland doesn’t have a quarterback, forcing it to go with return man Deonte Hardy.

17. Missouri

Offense

QB: Drew Lock
RB: Kyren Williams
RB: Rachaad White
WR: Jameson Williams
TE: MyCole Pruitt
T: Jalen Sundell
G: Dominick Puni
C: Trystan Colon
G: Tershawn Warton
T: Michael Niese
WR: Ronnie Bell

Defense

DE: Felix Anudike-Uzomah
DT: Maliek Collins
DT: Khristian Boyd
DE: Khalen Saunders
ILB: Foyesade Oluokun
ILB: Ezekiel Elliott
CB: Rico Payton
CB: Hassan Haskins
S: Jonathan Owens
S: Tony Adams
CB: Sam Webb

Specialists

LS: Trystan Colon
P: Jack Fox
K: Blake Grupe

Analysis: We’ve got a bunch of backups starting, and Missouri has produced so many running backs and so few defenders that we’ve got Ezekiel Elliott and Hassan Haskins playing defense. At least it’s a real quarterback at quarterback.

16. Virginia

Offense

QB: Tyrod Taylor
RB: M.J. Stewart
TE: Mo Alie-Cox
T: Mekhi Becton
G: Wyatt Teller
C: Chandler Zavala
G: Nate Davis
T: Morgan Moses
Sixth OL: Aaron Stinnie
TE: E.J. Jenkins
WR: Greg Dortch

Defense

DE: Da’Shawn Hand
DT: Kobie Turner
DT: Jonathan Allen
DE: Josh Sweat
ILB: Tremaine Edmunds
ILB: Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah
CB: Kei’Trel Clark
S: Juan Thornhill
S: Nick Scott
S: Chuck Clark
CB: Nazeeh Johnson

Specialists

LS: Wyatt Teller
P: Jordan Stout
K: Joey Slye

Analysis: The offense is bad, and I had to plug in safety M.J. Stewart at running back (hey, he averaged 9.6 yards per carry in high school!). But Tyrod Taylor at quarterback and solid defense gives Virginia a chance.

15. Pennsylvania

Offense

QB: Saquon Barkley
RB: James Conner
RB: Miles Sanders
WR: Marvin Harrison Jr.
TE: Kyle Pitts
T: Colby Sorsdal
G: Jonah Jackson
C: Connor McGovern
G: Jon Runyan
T: Mike McGlinchey
WR: D.J. Moore

Defense

DE: Jared Verse
DT: Teair Tart
DT: Quinton Jefferson
DE: Micah Parsons
ILB: Kyzir White
ILB: Alex Anzalone
ILB: Zaire Franklin
CB: Joey Porter
S: Geno Stone
S: Jaquan Brisker
S: Jordan Whitehead
CB: Bryce Hall

Specialists

LS: Luke Rhodes
P: D.J. Moore
K: D.J. Moore

Analysis: This is a really fun team, and the skill guys are good enough that I’m pushing Pennsylvania past a couple states with quarterbacks. But no signal-caller and no kicker caps the ceiling.

14. South Carolina

Offense

QB: Mason Rudolph
RB: Cordarrelle Patterson
WR: DeAndre Hopkins
WR: Mike Williams
T: Eric Watts
G: Jordan McFadden
C: Zacch Pickens
G: John Simpson
T: Javon Kinlaw
WR: Deebo Samuel
WR: Xavier Legette

Defense

DE: Jadeveon Clowney
DT: Poona Ford
DT: D.J. Jones
DT: Demarcus Lawrence
DE: Byron Young
ILB: Channing Tindall
ILB: D’Marco Jackson
CB: Stephon Gilmore
CB: Antonio Hamilton
S: Nick McCloud
S: Andru Phillips
CB: Cobie Durant

Specialists

LS: John Simpson
P: Tyler Bass
K: Tyler Bass

Analysis: That wide receiver group is nice. But we’ve got three defensive linemen playing offense and a bad quarterback. Quick game!

13. Mississippi

Offense

QB: Gardner Minshew
RB: Trey Benson
RB: Cam Akers
WR: A.J. Brown
T: Charles Cross
G: Damien Lewis
C: Byron Young
G: Elgton Jenkins
T: Benito Jones
WR: DK Metcalf
WR: Jonathan Mingo

Defense

DE: Jeffery Simmons
DT: Raekwon Davis
DT: Chris Jones
ILB: Willie Gay
ILB: Demario Davis
ILB: Nakobe Dean
CB: Emmanuel Forbes
CB: Charvarius Ward
S: J.T. Gray
S: Darrell Luter
CB: Brandin Echols

Offense

LS: Elgton Jenkins
P: Logan Cooke
K: Logan Cooke

Analysis: Decent quarterback, some weapons on the outside, a strong defensive front. Sure, we have two defensive lineman playing on the offensive line, but overall a solid group from a pool of only 33 players.

12. Illinois

Offense

QB: Aidan O’Connell
RB: Bucky Irving
WR: Jayden Reed
TE: Sam LaPorta
T: Peter Skoronski
G: John Michael Schmitz
C: Ethan Pocic
G: Graham Glasgow
T: Terron Armstead
TE: Cole Kmet
WR: Adam Thielen

Defense

DE: Dennis Gardeck
DT: A.J. Epenesa
DT: John Ridgeway
DE: Lukas Van Ness
ILB: T.J. Edwards
ILB: Robert Spillane
CB: Cameron Mitchell
CB: Chau Smith-Wade
S: Julian Love
S: Tyler Nubin
CB: Mike Ford

Specialists

LS: Scott Daly
P: Jake Elliott
K: Jake Elliott

Analysis: The offensive line is solid, and hopefully it can dominate because this group is underwhelming at quarterback and running back. And that defense is gonna have some trouble.

11. New Jersey

Offense

QB: Kenny Pickett
RB: Jonathan Taylor
RB: Ray Davis
WR: Noah Brown
TE: David Njoku
T: Dion Dawkins
G: Quenton Nelson
C: C.J. Hanson
G: Will Fries
T: Jermaine Eluemunor
TE: Mike Gesicki

Defense

DE: Josh Allen
DT: Rashan Gary
DT: Austin Johnson
DE: Odafe Oweh
ILB: Ronnie Hickman
ILB: Jabrill Peppers
CB: Max Melton
S: Ji-Ayir Brown
S: Jordan Fuller
S: Minkah Fitzpatrick
CB: Rasul Douglas

Specialists

LS: Thomas Hennessy
P: Younghoe Koo
K: Younghoe Koo

Analysis: The plan will be to run behind the left side of the line and hope the defense makes some plays. We had to stick a couple of safeties at inside linebacker, but hey, that’s not the most egregious position switch we’ve seen on here.

10. Arizona

Offense

QB: Brock Purdy
RB: Bijan Robinson
WR: Christian Kirk
TE: Mark Andrews
T: Jordan Morgan
G: Kyle Hinton
C: J.J. Jansen
G: Andrus Peat
T: Austin Jackson
WR: Jacob Cowing
WR: Brenden Rice

Defense

DE: Cam Jordan
DT: Roy Lopez
DT: D.J. Davidson
DE: Hogan Hatten
LB: Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles
LB: Dominique Hampton
CB: Levi Wallace
CB: Isaiah Oliver
S: Isaiah Pola-Mao
S: Kelee Ringo
CB: Byron Murphy

Specialists

LS: J.J. Jansen
P: Brayden Narveson
K: Brayden Narveson

Analysis: A fun little offense, and it will finally let us know if Brock Purdy is a product of his environment in San Francisco. Long-snapper Hogan Hatten is playing edge, but, hey, at least he played some linebacker at Idaho. Arizona amazingly has four long snappers in the NFL, so if there is a rash of injuries at that position, it’s covered.

9. Michigan

Offense

QB: Kirk Cousins
RB: John Kelly
WR: Trishton Jackson
TE: Tyler Conklin
T: Taylor Moton
G: Andrew Wylie
C: Michael Onwenu
G: Bernhard Raimann
T: Jack Conklin
Sixth OL: Michael Jordan
TE: Adam Trautman

Defense

DE: Matt Judon
DT: Mazi Smith
DT: Zach Sieler
DT: Brandon Graham
DE: Aidan Hutchinson
ILB: Eric Wilson
CB: Sean Murphy-Bunting
CB: Jourdan Lewis
S: Avonte Maddox
S: Tavierre Thomas
CB: Sauce Gardner

Specialists

LS: Taybor Pepper
P: Bryce Baringer
K: Jake Moody

Analysis: Solid quarterback, good defense. Avert your eyes when checking out that skill group, but there is enough here at premium positions to be competitive.

8. North Carolina

Offense

QB: Drake Maye
RB: Jaylen Wright
WR: Keenan Allen
WR: Dyami Brown
T: Kendall Lamm
G: Oli Udoh
C: Garrett Bradbury
G: Landon Dickerson
T: Ickey Ekwonu
WR: Kameron Johnson
WR: Jamison Crowder

Defense

DE: Keion White
DT: Javon Hargrave
NT: Jordan Davis
DT: Dexter Lawrence
DE: Alex Highsmith
ILB: Germaine Pratt
ILB: Harold Landry
CB: Jaire Alexander
S: Malik Mustapha
S: Mike Hughes
CB: Garrett Williams

Specialists

LS: Garrett Bradbury
P: Bradley Pinion
K: Joshua Karty

Analysis: Pretty solid overall lineup. Much comes down to the unproven Drake Maye at quarterback.

7. Ohio

Offense

QB: Joe Burrow
RB: David Montgomery
FB: Kyle Juszczyk
WR: Tre Tucker
TE: Travis Kelce
T: Paris Johnson
G: Joe Thuney
C: Ryan Kelly
G: Liam Eichenberg
T: Taylor Decker
WR: Ashton Dulin

Defense

DE: Sam Hubbard
DT: Zach Harrison
DT: Dre’Mont Jones
DE: Dawuane Smoot
ILB: Jordan Hicks
ILB: David Long
ILB: Jerome Baker
CB: Denzel Ward
S: Mike Edwards
S: Bryan Cook
CB: Marshon Lattimore

Specialists

LS: Liam McCullough
P: Kyle Juszczyk
K: Kyle Juszczyk

Analysis: This is probably the most interesting state on the list. Multiple high-end stars, highlighted by Burrow, Kelce, Ward, Johnson and Lattimore. But the depth in areas like wide receiver and edge rusher is lacking. And a major downside: no kicker or punter from Ohio. That hurts.

6. Alabama

Offense

QB: Jameis Winston
RB: Brian Robinson
WR: George Pickens
TE: Jordan Matthews
T: Tytus Howard
G: Lester Cotton
C: Bradley Bozeman
G: Javion Cohen
T: Trenton Scott
WR: Darnell Mooney
WR: Nico Collins

Defense

DE: Za’Darius Smith
DT: Quinnen Williams
DT: Daron Payne
DE: Bryce Huff
ILB: C.J. Mosley
ILB: Quincy Williams
CB: Marlon Humphrey
CB: McCreary, Roger
S: Jimmie Ward
S: Reed Blankenship
CB: Cam-Taylor Britt

Specialists

LS: Bradley Bozeman
P: Will Reichard
K: Evan McPherson

Analysis: The quarterback options were Winston, Nick Mullens and Bo Nix, and we’ll roll with Winston. Really good wideouts, but that line is rough. This is certainly a defensive team, with some absolute stars on that side of the ball and an extremely deep cornerback group if the starters go down.

5. Louisiana

Offense

QB: Dak Prescott
RB: Travis Etienne
WR: Ja’Marr Chase
WR: DeVonta Smith
T: Cam Robinson
G: O’Cyrus Torrence
C: Lloyd Cushenberry
G: Kevin Dotson
T: Max Mitchell
WR: Malik Nabers
WR: Justin Jefferson

Defense

DE: David Onyemata
DT: Davon Godchaux
DE: Jerry Tillery
ILB: Devin White
ILB: Patrick Queen
CB: Derek Stingley
CB: Donte Jackson
S: Justin Reid
S: Tyrann Mathieu
CB: L’Jarius Sneed
CB: Tre’Davious White

Specialists

LS: Lloyd Cushenberry
P: Justin Jefferson
K: Justin Jefferson

Analysis: Some definite holes on this team, especially on the defensive front, and there is no kicker. But Dak running four-wide with Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson, DeVonta Smith and Malik Nabers will give this team a shot against anybody. The defensive backs are also awesome. This isn’t a well-rounded team but the presence of multiple superstars puts it in the mix.

4. Georgia

Offense

QB: Trevor Lawrence
RB: Jahmyr Gibbs
RB: Alvin Kamara
WR: Tyreek Hill
TE: Evan Engram
T: Orlando Brown
G: Trent Brown
C: David Andrews
G: Jamaree Salyer
T: Andrew Thomas
WR: Jakobi Myers

Defense

DE: Montez Sweat
DT: Derrick Brown
DT: Cameron Heyward
DE: Will Anderson
ILB: Roquan Smith
ILB: Jamin Davis
CB: A.J. Terrell
CB: Brian Branch
S: Kyle Hamilton
S: Kyle Dugger
CB: Darius Slay

Specialists

LS: Nick Moore
P: Blake Gilikin
K: Harrison Butker

Analysis: This is a lineup that would make some noise in the NFL. The offense is fun, and while the wide receiver position is a little light, Tyreek Hill at the top still gives it firepower. And that defense is going to give other states some problems.

3. California

Offense

QB: Josh Allen
RB: Najee Harris
WR: Davante Adams
TE: Brock Bowers
T: Kolton Miller
G: Joel Bitonio
C: Coleman Shelton
G: Alijah Vera-Tucker
T: Tyron Smith
WR: Michael Pittman
WR: Amon-Ra St. Brown

Defense

DE: Uchenna Nwosu
DT: Kenny Clark
DT: Vita Vea
DE: Kayvon Thibodeaux
ILB: Shaq Thompson
ILB: Fred Warner
CB: Trent McDuffie
CB: Taron Johnson
S: Marcus Williams
S: Jalen Thompson
CB: Jaylon Johnson

Specialists

LS: Aaron Brewer
P: Corey Bojorquez
K: Nick Folk

Analysis: This is a very, very good team from top to bottom, starting with a quarterback who is playing at an MVP level this season. The secondary is very good, and Vita Vea anchors the defensive front. But as we will see in the top-2, the pass rush isn’t quite as dominant as the others, which puts California a tick behind.

2. Florida

Offense

QB: Lamar Jackson
RB: Derrick Henry
WR: Calvin Ridley
TE: Jonnu Smith
T: Laremy Tunsil
G: Evan Neal
C: Cesar Ruiz
G: Robert Hainsey
T: Jawaan Taylor
WR: Zay Flowers
WR: Diontae Johnson

Defense

DE: Joey Bosa
DT: Jalen Carter
DT: Leonard Williams
DE: Nick Bosa
ILB: Azeez Al-Shaair
ILB: Lavonte David
CB: Devon Witherspoon
CB: Carlton Davis
S: Derwin James
S: Marcus Maye
CB: Patrick Surtain

Specialists

LS: Charley Hughlett
P: Tommy Townsend
K: Matt Prater

Analysis: Florida has the Ravens’ star quarterback-running back duo and solid receivers on offense, and the defense is absolutely outrageous. The front four of Jalen Carter, Nick Bosa, Leonard Williams and Joey Bosa will give offensive coordinators nightmares, while the back seven has stars everywhere. As potent as some of these other states are on offense, they are not going to score much against this defense.

1. Texas

Offense

QB: Patrick Mahomes
RB: J.K. Dobbins
WR: CeeDee Lamb
WR: Mike Evans
T: Trent Williams
G: Tyler Smith
C: Erik McCoy
G: Lane Johnson
T: Rashawn Slater
WR: Jaylen Waddle
WR: Garrett Wilson

Defense

DE: Maxx Crosby
DT: Nnamdi Madubuike
DT: Ed Oliver
DT: Myles Garrett
DE: Danielle Hunter
ILB: Kenneth Murray
ILB: Jordyn Brooks
CB: Paulson Adebo
S: Tre’Von Moehrig
S: Antoine Winfield
CB: Christian Gonzalez

Specialists

LS: Zach Wood
P: Braden Mann
K: Brandon Aubrey

Analysis: The best quarterback on the planet. Four dominant receivers. A star-studded offensive line. A pass-rush that takes no prisoners, and a back seven that will get the job done. There are some very, very good rosters in the top-5, as states like Florida and California would win the Super Bowl with their collection of talent. But Texas has the best of them all in 2024.
