Warriors Guard Moses Moody’s Contract Incentives Revealed

Golden State Warriors guard Moses Moody signed a three-year, $39 million contract extension two weeks ago, and recently his $1.5 million worth in contract incentives were leaked by The Athletic’s John Hollinger.

Moody’s new deal includes an average of $500,000 a year in unlikely incentives. His extension starts at $462,093 in 2025-26 and increases the maximally allowed 8% per year.

According to Hollinger’s sources, Moody will receive bonus pay if he achieves all three of the following markers: playing at least 1,600 minutes, attempting at least nine 3-pointers per 100 possessions, and achieving at least 60% true shooting.

Per Spotrac, Moody’s incentives cannot pay out until next season. This season will only determine whether his incentives are considered “likely” or “unlikely” for the purposes of his 2025-26 cap number.

If his bonuses are the former, his cap hit goes from $11,574,075 to $12,037,038, per Hollinger. Even if Moody doesn’t hit the incentives, it counts against Golden State’s cap for the first and second apron.

The Warriors are not expected to be a cap room team next summer anyways.

Plus, Moody’s contract has a “poison pill” restriction until July 1, 2025. The “poison pill” affects players who recently signed rookie-scale contract extensions.

Moody played a career-high 1,156 minutes in 66 games last season

Moody, 22, has yet to play 1,600 minutes in a single NBA regular season. However, he played a career-high 1,156 minutes in 66 games (nine starts) last season with the Warriors.

Additionally, the 6-foot-6 Moody has never attempted at least nine 3-pointers per 100 possessions in a campaign. During his rookie 2021-22 season, he averaged 3.2 made 3-pointers on 8.8 3-point attempts per 100 possessions.

Through seven games (three starts) this season, he’s averaging 6.2 made 3-pointers on 12.7 3-point attempts per 100 possessions. This will be difficult to maintain considering the Arkansas product has only played 125 minutes.

As for the third qualifying marker, Moody has in fact averaged at least 60% true shooting in a single season. In 2022-23, he averaged 4.8 points per game on 60.3% true shooting in 63 contests (three starts).

His true shooting percentage through seven games this season is 66.9%. Then again, a smaller sample size is not much to go off of. At least 20 more games will help determine if Moody’s latest performances are just flukes.
