The NHL’s newest team will be known as the Utah Hockey Club for its first season. Scroll below for Utah’s future names and uniforms.

Utah Hockey Club Name

It’s official.

The Arizona Coyotes franchise has been sold to Utah Jazz owners Smith Entertainment Group. Utah acquires the franchise, players, and hockey operations department.

Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo retains the Coyotes’ intellectual property.

The Utah Hockey Club will play its first official season in 2024-2025.

“Today is a monumental day for the state of Utah as we officially close on the establishment of a new NHL franchise,” Ryan Smith, governor of Utah Hockey Club and chairman of Smith Entertainment Group, said. “The NHL has been incredible to work with throughout this process, providing us with invaluable guidance and support. We have a ton of work to do — training camp starts in less than 100 days — and could not be more excited about what’s to come.”

For the first season, Utah elected to go with “Utah Hockey Club” for the inaugural season. It will be based in Salt Lake City. However, that name is only temporary.

Fans can now vote for the team name that will be used in the future, starting with the 2025-2026 season.

The choices: Yeti, Venom, Mammoth, Blizzard, Outlaws, and Utah Hockey Club.

This round of voting opens today and will stay open until June 20.

There will be another round of voting after that.

Utah Hockey Club Uniforms

The Utah Hockey Club jerseys will say “Utah” on the front during the 2024-2025 season.

According to a press release, the color palette consists of “rock black, representing the darkness of night in the mountains and the volcanic rock of Utah’s deserts; salt white, illustrating both the snow on Utah’s peaks and the famous salt flats; and mountain blue, a representation of Utah’s rich winter sports history and its clear skies for more than 230 days a year.”

The home uniforms will be rock black with Utah across the chest and feature salt and white and mountain blue striping across each arm, the bottom of the jersey, and on the socks.

The away uniforms will feature rock black and mountain blue striping with stairstep lettering.

The Utah Hockey Club boasts similar colors to the Utah Jazz’s colors. The Hockey Club and Jazz have the same owners.
