The New York Giants Showing More Fight Off the Field

It’s been a tough year for the New York Giants and first-year head coach Joe Judge. Although they are riding a two-game win streak and sit in second place in their division, the Giants sport a 3-7 record. Injuries have certainly played a key role and now some internal issues may have played a role in the Giants’ slow start.

Although their record sits at 3-7, the New York Giants appear to be trending in the right direction on the football field. The Giants are coming off two big divisional victories, keeping them alive in the ugly-looking NFC East. Last week, the Giants looked good in posting a 27-17 home victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

The week before, the Giants went on the road and outlasted the Washington Football Team 23-20. The win over Washington snapped a two-game skid. In those two games, however, the Giants lost by a combined three points. In Week 8, the Giants fell 25-23 to the heavily-favored Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football. The previous week, they dropped a 22-21 to the Eagles.

The Giants had put themselves in a huge hole to begin the season. Under rookie head coach Joe Judge, they lost the first five games of the season. They seemed to have gotten things together in the last couple of weeks. All three of their victories have come against division opponents.

The Giants remain in the thick of the NFC East race

It might not be much to brag about, but the New York Giants are very much in the running for a division title. The NFC East is woeful and each of the four teams still has hopes for a postseason berth despite entering Week 11 with a combined 10 victories. The Giants, however, are the hottest team after having won their last two games.

At 3-5-1, the Philadelphia Eagles are leading the division. The Giants, who have their by week this weekend, are next at 3-7. Both the Washington Football Team and the Dallas Cowboys round out the division with 2-7 records. After coming up short in losses to the Washington Football Team and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Giants head coach Joe Judge knew he needed 60 minutes of football against the Eagles this past Sunday.

“We have to finish as a team and play a complete game,” Judge told NJ.com before the game. “You can’t fall asleep on Philly. They’re an explosive team, they do a great job in situations. We already knew this team is a very good team on third down, in the red area, in two-minute drives. They do a great job in terms of scheming you up in the game plan element. Doug does a great job in terms of starting the game out fast, creating explosive plays and really finding things that you struggle with and looking to expose them.”

Giants fire their line coach and things get heated

One thing is certain. The New York Giants, after two straight victories, have fired offensive line coach Mark Colombo. What happened before and/or after is still unclear. Fox Sports Radio’s Jason McIntyre said Colombo and head coach Joe Judge got into a fistfight this morning and Judge fired him immediately.

Giants beat writer Art Stapleton said he heard that, although the exchange between Judge and Colombo may have been intense, there was no fistfight. “From what I can gather through reporting inside and outside the Giants, choice of words – “fistfight” – not an accurate description of what took place between Judge and Colombo,” he tweeted. “There were words. Little doubt about the exchange being intense. Punches? Not from what I am hearing.”

In any case, Colombo has been replaced by Dave DeGuglielmo. DeGuglielmo and Judge had worked together when they were both with the New England Patriots. Although the Giants are off this week, they still keep on fighting.
