Justin Fields Russell WIlson

During his press conference on Tuesday, Mike Tomlin stated that Russell Wilson is fully healthy and will compete with Justin Fields for the starting quarterback position.

Fields has started the Steelers’ first six games of the season as Wilson tended to a calf injury.

Pittsburgh is 4-2 and tied for first in the AFC North.

On Wednesday, Wilson took first-team snaps during practice but it is unknown if Fields did as well.

While speaking to Rich Eisen on Eisen’s podcast, NFL reporter Albert Breer stated “There are a ton of people in that place right now that feel like Russell Wilson would limit them on offense in a way that Justin Fields does not. Which I think is a big part of the reason why so many people there just wish Tomlin would stick with Fields.”

Below, we discuss whether the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense would be better with Russell Wilson or Justin Fields.

Should The Steelers Start Russell Wilson Or Stick With Justin Fields?

The Pittsburgh Steelers are 4-2 and tied for first in the AFC North.

Justin Fields has five passing TDs and five rushing TDs on the season while throwing just one interception. He is averaging just 184.3 passing yards per game but is averaging 38.5 rushing yards per game. What Fields may lack in the passing game, he is making up for it in rushing.

Russell Wilson may help improve the passing game as he is a more confident passer. However, the Steelers are weak at offensive line and Wilson cannot escape like he used to. Fields is the more athletic quarterback. This is why many in the building feel Wilson will limit the offense.

Fields is on pace to accumulate roughly 30 total TDs on the season if he stays on this pace. Wilson will be 36 years old in November, while Fields is only 25 years old. The Steelers need a long-term solution at the QB spot and Wilson is not the answer. While Fields has not lit the world on fire, he also has not played poorly. Fields is a decade younger and could emerge as a long-term solution for the Steelers if he gets more comfortable running Arthur Smith’s offense.

Pittsburgh has a big week seven game on Sunday Night Football at home. If Wilson gets the starting nod and struggles, the fans will turn on him and chant for Fields. There will be a lot of pressure on Wilson to deliver if he starts.

With a 4-2 record and tied for first in the AFC North, the Steelers should stick with Justin Fields as the starting QB.
