Detroit Pistons Sign Malik Beasley To One-Year Deal Worth Over $6M

The Detroit Pistons are signing free agent guard Malik Beasley to a one-year deal worth more than $6 million, his agency, Hazan Sports Management, announced on Saturday.

Malik Beasley has averaged 10.9 points, 38.5% shooting from 3-point range across eight NBA seasons

Beasley, who turns 28 on Nov. 26, was selected 19th overall by the Denver Nuggets in the 2016 NBA draft out of Florida State. The 6-foot-4, 187-pound guard will enter his ninth season in 2024-25.

In 496 career NBA games (191 starts) across eight seasons, he has averaged 10.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 23.1 minutes while shooting 42.5% from the field, 38.5% from beyond the arc, and 80% at the foul line.

Beasley played his first four seasons (2016-20) with Denver before making stops with the Minnesota Timberwolves (2020-22), Utah Jazz (2022-23 season), Los Angeles Lakers (2022-23 season), and Milwaukee Bucks (2023-24 season).

In 79 games (77 starts) last season with Milwaukee, the Florida State product averaged 11.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 29.6 minutes per game.

Beasley also shot 41.3% last season from 3-point range on 6.9 attempts per game, after signing for the veteran minimum. He made 224 3s on 542 attempts, his third straight season with at least 224 3-pointers.

Detroit Pistons ranked 26th in 3-point accuracy last season

Additionally, in Milwaukee’s 128-112 win over the Toronto Raptors on Nov. 15, he scored a season-high 30 points on 11-of-14 (78.6%) shooting from the floor and 8-of-11 (72.7%) from deep.

During the first round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs, he recorded 20 points on 8-of-12 (66.7%) shooting from the field and four 3-pointers, in the Bucks’ 126-113 Game 4 loss to the Indiana Pacers.

Furthermore, the Pistons were one of the NBA’s least accurate 3-point shooting teams last season, ranking 29th in made 3s per game (11), 27th in attempts (31.7) and 26th in accuracy (34.8%).

Beasley’s signing should help bolster Detroit’s perimeter shooting.

According to Spotrac, the Pistons entered Saturday with around $25 million in cap space, in addition to the $8 million room exception to use if they fill the rest of their space.

Detroit also has Bird Rights to sign restricted free agent forward Simone Fontecchio. This means the club can exceed the cap to re-sign him once the franchise uses its cap space.
