NBA Closes Investigation Into Josh Giddey For Alleged Inappropriate Relationship

The NBA has closed its investigation into Oklahoma City Thunder guard Josh Giddey for an alleged inappropriate relationship with an underage girl, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Thursday.

This news comes months after Newport Beach (Calif.) police previously determined they would not pursue charges in January because they had been “unable to corroborate any criminal activity” by Giddey.

The NBA arrived at the same conclusion and has now closed its investigation into the 21-year-old.

Attorney Gloria Allred, who represented the minor, told TMZ Sports in January, “It does not surprise me that law enforcement would close their investigation since our client who is a minor and her parents have chosen not to speak to law enforcement to protect their privacy.”

The allegations against Giddey surfaced on social media in late November. Newport Beach police opened an investigation on Nov. 29 after an anonymous social media user made the claim.

In a since-deleted post, the unnamed user said a girl who is seen with Giddey in videos and photographs was a high school junior at the time. The social media account was deactivated since making the post.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver had said in early December that the league’s investigation would “take a back seat” to the police’s process. The league determined that Giddey did not violate any NBA rules to warrant a fine or suspension, after reviewing classified documents and gathering information.

Giddey was booed by fans when the allegations surfaced

Following OKC’s 106-103 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Nov. 28, reporters were quick to ask Giddey about the allegations during his postgame interview. However, the 6-foot-8 guard didn’t budge.

“Yeah, I mean, I understand the question, obviously,” Giddey said. “But there’s no further comment right now. … I get the question guys. I completely understand you guys want to know about it. But just for right now, I don’t have anything to say.”

Giddey has declined to comment about the league’s investigative findings, per Wojnarowski.

The third-year guard continued to play for the Thunder after the allegations arose. From one arena to the next, he was loudly hit with boos from NBA fans when he was either passed the ball or dribbled it up the court.

In 10 playoff games of OKC’s postseason run, Giddey averaged 8.7 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 45.3% from the field.
