NASCAR: Coke Zero Sugar 400

At first glance, the Wood family’s link to industry history may not appear profound to new NASCAR Cup Series fans.

Until, that is, they Google NASCAR history and discover the ground-breaking assistance Wood Brothers Racing has provided the circuit since 1950. The organization may have fallen into a lower-tier program, but when Harrison Burton drove the No. 21 Ford to a win at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday night, it marked the iconic race team’s 100th win and first since 2017.

The previous team driver to win was Ryan Blaney, the reigning series champion. On the final lap of Saturday’s Coke Zero Sugar 400, Blaney said he became a “fanboy,” according to NBC Sports.

“I was hooting and hollering,” Blaney said.

Guess who else was “hooting and hollering?”

Burton’s father, Jeff, a former Cup competitor, paused to take a picture with his son in Victory Lane.

“I’ll tell you in 20 years,” Jeff Burton said. “That’s why you take pictures. These moments are hard to come by.

“I know how special it is and especially here with all the things that happen to make this sport.”

Like winning a race as the No. 34-ranked driver in the points standings and for a team that announced it will bring in Josh Berry to drive next season. Harrison Burton remains 517 points behind circuit leader Tyler Reddick, but he qualified for the playoffs that begin with the Round of 16 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sept. 8.

Sunday’s event at Darlington Raceway marks the end of the regular season, where more history will be created.
