Report: Manchester United Eyes Alternative After Learning Alphonso Davies’ Wage Demands
Premier League giants Manchester United have long been keeping tabs on Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies. However, due to his hefty wage demands, the club has identified an alternative, with Chelsea man Ben Chilwell reportedly emerging as the No. 1 backup for the Canadian defender.
Manchester United Identify Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell as Alphonso Davies’ Alternative
Jet-heeled fullback Davies is in the final year of his contract at Bayern Munich. He held talks with the hierarchy about a renewal last year, but the verbal agreement went for a toss following a major reshuffling of the board. Negotiations have since stalled, and there is a good chance that he will leave the club as a free agent at the end of the season.
Alongside Real Madrid and Barcelona, Manchester United are one of the frontrunners for securing his services, but Davies’ contract demands have complicated their pursuit. According to CaughtOffside, the Canada international is demanding a contract worth as much as €12 million ($13.03 million) a year, which is considerably higher than what United is willing to pay.
Manchester United does not want to be left empty-handed if Davies refuses to lower his demands. This is why the Red Devils have identified Chelsea man Chilwell as a more realistic option at left-back. Chilwell has fallen out of favor under Enzo Maresca and is likely to be open to the move. However, like United’s current first-choice left-back Luke Shaw, Chilwell is also quite injury-prone, which could hurt the club in the long run.
Davies Is Enjoying Life at Bayern Munich Under Vincent Kompany
At the end of the 2023-24 season, Davies looked certain to head out the exit door at the end of his contract. But judging by one of his recent interviews, Vincent Kompany may have given Bayern the chance to try again.
Opening up about life under the former Manchester City player, Davies told The Athletic:
“The way that we’re playing now is very intense. He picks the best team and the best players to put on the team that train well. Every training session is a battle for the starting spot. Nothing is guaranteed. The way he talks to the team, he is polite but firm. He has ideas and we’re executing them well.”
Davies has played 12 games under Kompany this season, providing three assists.
