Premier League heavyweights Liverpool have been credited with interest in Freiburg midfielder Merlin Rohl. Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano thinks the Reds are not focused on bolstering the midfield but suggests that Sporting Director Richard Hughes may have come across him.

Freiburg midfielder Rohl has emerged as one of the most promising players in the Bundesliga this season. The 22-year-old possesses excellent ball control, is a good passer, and has impressive vision for his age. According to Christian Falk, Liverpool sent scouts to watch him and have since put him on their shortlist of potential transfer targets. Aware of the Merseysiders’ interest, Freiburg tied Rohl to an improved contract on September 18, 2024. The club, however, has not confirmed the length of Rohl’s current contract.

Fabrizio Romano Gives Verdict on Liverpool Merlin Rohl Links

The extension has undoubtedly made Rohl a little more difficult to attain, but Liverpool is reportedly not throwing in the towel just yet, with reports continuing to link the club with the midfielder.

In his Daily Briefing column for CaughtOffside, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano addressed the rumors, saying:

I’ve seen the stories about Liverpool’s interest in Freiburg’s Merlin Rohl, but at the moment I don’t have confirmation on Liverpool working on this deal. Liverpool’s focus is currently on different areas, but also for Rohl at the moment there are no concrete contacts ongoing.

Richard Hughes has fantastic knowledge of talents so I’m sure he’s monitoring many players but that’s it now.

Arne Slot Extends Dream Run with Win over Crystal Palace

After Jurgen Klopp announced his decision to step down as manager at the end of the 2023-24 seasons, fans were concerned about Liverpool’s future. The concern only intensified when Arne Slot was named as the German’s successor, as the Dutchman had not managed a club from the top five European leagues before.

Over the last couple of months, Slot has successfully converted skeptics into fans, taking Liverpool to the top of the Premier League rankings. Since the start of the season, Liverpool has played seven Premier League games, winning six and losing one. With 18 points on the board, they sit one point clear of Manchester City (2nd) and Arsenal (3rd).

Liverpool picked up their last win league win away at Crystal Palace on Saturday, October 5. The Merseyside outfit did not play the most engaging soccer, but they got the job done, snatching a slender 1-0 win thanks to a ninth-minute strike from Diogo Jota.

Liverpool will return to Premier League action with a clash with Chelsea, after the international break, on October 20.
