After weeks of speculation, a shocking decision to turn down $440 million, and a fiery bidding war at the MLB trade deadline, Juan Soto has officially found his new home. On Tuesday, the San Diego Padres swooped in and traded a historic package for the 23-year-old superstar, and their odds to win the World Series are already on the move.
If you’re holding a Padres World Series ticket from earlier in the season, you’re going to be sitting pretty by the time the playoffs roll around in October.
Padres World Series odds soar after Juan Soto trade
The Washington Nationals knew they had to find a way to deal Soto by Tuesday’s trade deadline. The two-time All-Star recently turned down a $440 million extension that would’ve set the record for the most lucrative contract in MLB history.
It was clear at that point Soto wanted out, and he got his wish just in the nick of time.
With only a few hours remaining until the deadline, the Nationals traded Soto and Josh Bell to the Padres in exchange for MacKenzie Gore, Robert Hassell III, C.J. Abrams, James Wood, Jarlin Susana, and one more major league player, per a tweet from Jeff Passan of ESPN. The other major leaguer is reportedly Eric Hosmer, per a tweet from Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
In the immediate aftermath of the trade, San Diego’s odds to win the World Series soared from 17/1 to 11/1, per a tweet from Covers. The Padres were as high as 30/1 a week ago before the Soto trade rumors started heating up.
The Los Angeles Dodgers (+350) and the New York Mets (+600) are now the only teams in the NL with lower World Series odds than the Padres.
At 58-46, the Padres are currently 12 games back of the Dodgers in the NL West. San Diego is only two games ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies and three games ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals in the Wild Card standings.
There’s no guarantee the Padres will even make the postseason in 2022, but if they do, they’ll have as good a chance as any team to run the table and cash those tickets.
